Natural skin drumheads are often thought of as delicate and temperamental. Yet, over years of use, we’ve come to find that they’re for more rugged and forgiving than their reputation would lead you to believe. Durability, tuning accommodations, and overtone control are all major benefits that are often overlooked. We’ll cover some of the most surprising and beneficial characteristics in this episode.

I love that with how consistent your content is, that even on my phone speakers, I could immediately hear the difference between this tone and what you are normally getting with synthetic heads. Thanks for all the amazing work you do. Top effing notch.

Great video, thanks. I've put calf skin heads on the batter sides of my "jazz" kit and I absolutely love the sound. I wanted to try them out because I don't want to keep using disposable plastic stuff if I can possibly avoid it. I don't know that they would be useable in a live setting due to the problems that led to them being replaced by plastic back in the day. I've never used any tools apart from a key and my ears for tuning but now I am using a dehumidifier 😂

I enjoy playing my Kentville heavy head in the high to very high range the most. Great high snare sound without overtones. But I also love playing it tunned very low for a big fat sound. REMEMBER; for longevity if you have have extreme temperture variations always back off tension rods after playing and leave the head quite loose while being stored away for a long time.

Calfskins can get over stretched, to the point where the collar is so high it is even with the drum rim. But you can soak, remove, remount, and it's good as new.

I have been using calfskins for years. They CAN wear out. But plastic heads WILL wear out. Also: I save $$ by tucking my own heads, which I taught myself to do during the pandemic.

I use Fibreskyns tuned medium to medium high which are the nearest to animal skins but tend to choke if you go too high unlike naturals. Remo made them in a Super weight early on but these were discontinued along with the Legacy series which were similar. They were more durable but drier and again did not like to tune high, with the Legacy they would start to fur or pit. Unlike natural skins they would keep their tune and not be affected by humidity and temp. In a temperature and humidity controlled studio real skins are great.

Pretty amazing to hear it not choke out at the loudest volume. I've gotta get one of these! Also nice samba feel at the end

Used calfskin heads top and bottom in the 1970s (Amrawco). Miss the sound but not the fuss!

I know they are synthetic, but do the fiberskyn heads have any of the advantages of the natural hide heads? As always, thanks for the video!

They have some, such as a good texture for brushes and a warmer tone, but the natural heads do it completely effortlessly and super natural and warm.

I use calfskins all the time and don't think Fiberskyns are very close, or very good. The layers tend to separate.

Honestly any coated 2 ply head seems closer to a calf skin

Love the sound and own a few myself but just find them a little too fussy for some situations. If you are on an outdoor gig and it’s humid, good luck haha. I had to crank that thing before every song and it was still like hitting a wet paper bag haha. Definitely keeping them around tho for studio work when the time calls for it

I have the Kentville heavy on my Sonor birch 14" x 6.5" snare. I thick I should have got the medium or fine head as I'am not a heavy hitter, but it's still a great head.
