Natural Somatic Healing: Maria's Story

Natural somatic healing can deeply improve the lives of children with severe disabilities. This is a video portrait of Maria, a 9 year old child with athetoid CP, a severe form of cerebral palsy. She was one of the most challenged children who have come to the Spiral Movement Center, initially unable to even voluntarily turn her own head. Over the course of a year, she has gained the most fundamental motor abilities-to use her torso, to extend her limbs, to initiate movement, and to learn the first co-ordinations involved with rolling, crawling and walking. Her story shows how even the most challenged children can slowly improve through somatic awareness and praxis.
