I've been going through this book since November of last year and it's completely revitalized my love for drawing. Before I had aspirations of grandeur I couldn't HOPE to reach because I simply wasn't drawing enough. Now, with Nicolaides's instruction, I'm drawing so much that I have to force myself to stop. It's nothing so grand or amazing, but it's everything that satisfies me. Nicolaides helped me love the ACT of drawing, not the IDEA of it. As for the inner vs outer method, I only have experience with Nicolaides' lessons on the weighted and modelled drawing, and I could probably talk someone's ears off what I think about those. I feel like it's best to start on the inside, much like the inner journey of an artist, as it forces you to think three dimensionally. The way I approach it is using wrapping lines around the 'core in the same way a sculptor approaches it. Simple at first, but quickly complicated.

Appreciate your post, thanks. I'm practicing hybrid approach of gesture / contour combined with interior dimension contrast, as I learn to draw.

I got this book from a local Sunday family market under $2. It's a really good book initially published in the 1930s. My copy was form 70s. It's more or less based on or focused on fine art instead of comic. But it's good to gain this kind of knowledge. Comics or contemporary art is always inspired by Fine art. This book also show us how to think and understand the nature of drawing.

start from the inflection points, then push the lines either concave or convex... I also did a none talking review of this book, just a flip-thru, a classic drawing book.

There are two books are also pretty good. Learning to draw a creative approach to drawing. by Robert Kaupelis published in 1966. And Drawing on yhe right side of the brain. By Betty Edwards, published in 1978. I got these books same day from Sunday family market. I guess they were collected by the same person and that person might pass away. So sadly the persons collected books were not appreciated. I hope after I died my books can be treated nicely.

I've been wondering this myself as a raw beginner. My intuition tells me that drawing from outside-in is appropriate for geometric shapes while inside-out is best for organic shapes.

Sounds like a good approach.

Interesting working inward - outward !

Agreed...different perspectives, each with its own merits. Perhaps a hybrid approach is best.

What do you think is the best art book for a complete beginner?

I'd go How to Draw the Marvel Way by John Buscema, with How to Draw Nearly Everything by Victor Perard for nature and animals.

Never thought of working from inwards

It's a cool method. Thanks for posting.

It's by design. The lesson is: Work harder than ever. You will still suck. There's always someone better than you and not for long.

Thanks for watching. I hear you about comparisons, but that's worthless. Artists go by what's inside us.
