What you do and promote is so important and commendable. Future generations will owe you a debt.Well done.My garden is a wildlife haven (i hope). I've planted a mixed native hedge.Hawthorn tree.Every single plant is bee and butterfly friendly. I've made a dead hedge,log pile,meadow. A decent sized area left to do its own thing,mainly brambles.The one thing missing and probably the most important is a pond.Only because i'm really struggling to find sub soil.Any ideas/suggestions?

An excellent collection of wonderful and useful ponds, the problem with small ponds is that due their lack of volume , they heat up to dangerous levels in hot sunshine, to the point that here in southern France, if a tin bath is left out in the sun, it is hot enough to bath in within a few hours, so the bigger/deeper you can make your pond, the better, they are a real asset to all wildlife, and it is amazing just how many species are attracted to a well sited pond. Thank you Chris - fortunately (unfortunately!) we don't enjoy the levels of heat experienced in south of France, but some summers will require topping up of small ponds even here in the UK, they are a vital habitat as you say and can provide a lot of relief to all kinds of creatures. But remember a tin bath will act like an oven. Touch the sides and it'll be red hot. A wildlife pond has a naturally cool base because it's earth under the surface level.

I could so easily have made that tear drop shaped pond, it was making itself, really, a couple of winters ago. I put raised beds on top of it to stop it. It did look horrible in the winter, no plants around it. Just a mud hole. Okay, early next spring I am digging up one of the beds and we will see what happens.

Some of these are beautiful and inspiring. I'm here because I need inspiration. Some of these are just stagnant mudholes, mosquito hatcheries. Sure, some other wildlife comes around, but the mosquitos will be prevalent and dangerous.

I'm glad you liked them. Not all shown were established, as is clear. I am not sure which country you reside in but here in the UK we don't have a huge problem with mosquitoes and we don't have malaria either so they're not dangerous, just annoying :) Any water source will attract mosquitoes though, whether that's a fibreglass pond or a concrete one - these are designed for wildlife and here amphibians, bats, birds and larger insects like dragonflies all feast on mosquitoes and their larvae - bats here consume up to 3000 insects each per night so it's good to encourage them :) Best wishes, Joel

Great video, Joel, and beautiful ponds with wildflowers to complement the designs and bring the wildlife around the water 👌💕. I have a small pond in my garden and it has a few 100s guppies in it that do control mosquitoes naturally. It also quenches the thirst of many wallabies and small marsupials that live around our bushland area during our tropical dry season.

I hope you've made one. I made my first one a couple of years ago and it's a magnet for wildlife. The birds absolutely love it. It's a hub of activity. They bathe, drink, hunt insects and socialise. If I were in charge of the country I'd make it a law for every garden to have a wildlife pond.

Stunning! I am curious to know your opinion on swimming ponds. Can a deeper area be used to bathe in while shallow margins are left to wildlife? Are the hotter months crucial for reproduction or is it possible to swim for 2-3 (or much less depending on the weather) and leave it untouched for the rest of the year? Is it possible to have it all or is it too much disturbance for wildlife? Ordered your book, can't wait for it to arrive! 🤩

Hi there :) Firstly, thank you re the book - I hope it is helpful to you as well as the channel. Swimming ponds can be used for both people and nature, the areas for swimming are usually kept relatively "separate" by planting around the edges using a margin to keep those areas separate or to have two ponds but adjacent, ie separated but look to be the same pond, the smaller area left for wildlife etc, although it's not possible to dictate to the creatures which pond they should use! ;) I hope this helps, if you were interested in one then please do drop me a line at [e-mail] and we can speak further :) Best wishes, Joel

Beautiful ! Have you considered to use argila instead of plastic tarpaulin ? With small pond like that it will be not expensive and the water and the nutriments within it will be share with your ground and your garden. And it's avoid to change the tarpaulins and micro plastics in your soil :)

Wow...you have a new subscriber here :) Been watching a selection of your pond building videos, congrats on a wonderful ethos! I am trying to find ideas for a small series of ponds through a meadow/orchard without having the contrived boulder edges which are so popular to hide the liner. How do I stop the pond slowly emptying due to the wicking of the soil that is over the liner edge?

Hi David! So sorry for the delay in acknowledging your comment, it's the busiest time for us at the moment so I'm just trying to catch up with everyone over a quick lunch break. I am absolutely thrilled that the channel has been helpful to you, your support really is appreciated. The ponds, using this method, will stop wicking once the plants have established and got their roots "down" - wind plays just as much of a part in evaporation as the sun of course so a good amount of cover plants will help reduce this. Yes :) The instructions on how to do these and why I use this subsoil on top are on the channel - the subsoil also allows you to plant direct into the soil which means no need for baskets in the water - I hope it is helpful to you - best wishes, Joel

Hello! This is wonderful to hear that you're thinking about making another habitat for nature, you will be rewarded for your efforts. Here in the UK we don't suffer great numbers of mosquitoes etc but the birds, bats, amphibians and larger insects that are drawn to these natural ponds and the habitat surrounding soon make a dent in the mosquitoes and their larvae :) It's worth it, I promise - I've heard about the spraying and, like you, wonder how many other insects are "damaged" alongside the mosquitoes - best wishes, Joel

Hi Joel, I built a wildlife pond last year following year videos and I am so delighted, as is the local wildlife. We even have some ducks who come to visit regularly! My question is about the fringes water lilies. They flowered beautifully in the spring and have now grown so that the leaves are about 20cm above the water level. They are planted in about 20 cm water. Should I move them deeper? Thanks

Hi there Julie, the way the ponds are constructed means that the water can soak up into the surrounding ground, but any pond whether fibreglass, concrete etc would overflow in downpours, the method here allows the water to seep into the surroundings. This is an important question. For me mosquitoes are part of the wild and are an important food source for other animals. I learned that we should accept their existence rather than focus on fighting them. If your pond is inhabited with wildlife, tadpoles, dragonfly larvae, other predatory insects can keep the number of mosquitoes at bay.

Hi there - as Marek has already answered so brilliantly, when these ponds are set up as in nature it encourages those other insects, bats and amphibians that enjoy eating the larvae and they keep the population to a minimum. My pond is always teeming with midges in summer. The pond is about ten feet away from my back door but they never bother me. I wouldn't know they were there unless I went out looking for them. The biggest nuisance on this planet are humans.

Hi there :) No, none at all - the oxygenating plants and cover plants (such as fringed water lilies, native here and do not take over like ornamental ones) keep the water clear and cool and using subsoil means that there is less nutrient and therefore algae doesn't thrive - I hope that's helpful - there are a few pond instructional videos on the channel if you wanted to see them, showing why this method works :) Best wishes, Joel

Hi Jay - absolutely they do, frogs will travel up to circa 1 mile to get to water sources, particularly during breeding time of course, same with newts - plus there's the beauty of the damselflies and dragonflies that of course find it easier to get to the ponds :) Best wishes, Joel

@@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton Wow! I never knew that. I know there are frogs here here, because I hear them. But it's a lot less than there used to be. The plot of land next to us is in the process of being developed, and so went the frogs =( So the only thing to do is to try and make them new habitat on our property I guess. And a pond to lay their eggs in, of course.

@@jaylambert599 That's wonderful to hear Jay - not the development aspect of course - but that you are intent on giving back some habitat for them, so many creatures are displaced and lost due to developments where there are a few stipulations for newt fencing etc and "surveys" but this never takes into account everything that will be affected and lose it's home/habitat. I am absolutely thrilled that you will be doing more than your bit and encouraging them back - I promise you will be rewarded for all your efforts :) I'm here if you need any advice/help Jay and of course there is the www.wildyourgarden.com website where you can find everything you will need - pond plants etc being added by the end of this week :) Best wishes to you and yours - Joel

I saw a man in his 'garden' last week and what a pathetic sight it was. His drive was resin gravel, his 'lawn' was astroturf and instead of beds he had block paving which he was intensely spraying with chemical weed killer. People like him ought to be arrested for crimes against nature.
