Idk you gotta understand that she’s just a teenager so she trying to figure out who she is and I thought you understood that cuz you watched the 4th year interview when she said that she felt a parody of herself and didn’t know who she was……I think she matured a lot and seems a lot happier like you can tell the difference cuz she’s nearly 20 and she said before that this change was her decision and wasn’t forced to do that……I’m really in love with the album she is incredible

Okay, this is probably going to come off as super aggressive so disclaimer: this is merely meant as a different perspective. You're really painting Billie as a "not like other girls" girl. She never covered herself up to "go against the stream". She did it because she didn't want to be sexualized as a literal child. She has also been open about having issues with her body image. The Vogue shoot was blown so out of proportion. Billie has said it was a fun opportunity to dress up and experiment with fashion, which she's always been open about loving, while being more comfortable with her body. She's always made it a point to project the image that's comfortable to her so to think her change in appearance or musical style is due to any outside influence does a serious diservice to her. She actually spoke about it in a recent interview kzbin.info/www/bejne/i2fdY4V4n5hqaNk. She is blonde. That's her natural hair color. I get that her colorful hair was very distinct but saying you're not into the blonde look is kind of rejecting her natural state. Her previous videos were darker because they were reflective of her state of mind at the time. And her new videos are the same. Therefore I Am was filmed the way it was because that was the only way it could have been filmed safely at the time due to covid restrictions. It was also a clear commentary on all the body shaming she was facing. She's more comfortable in her identity and her personhood so she's showing herself having fun in Lost Cause. NDA has her surrounded by actual speeding cars and being followed by disappearing shadowy figures. Expecting all of her videos to be edgy or weird is putting her into a specific box. I do think the Vogue shoot and the Lost Cause video releasing so close together was a one-two punch of a different Billie that threw a lot of people for a loop. Billie is simply growing and evolving. Her lyrical content is becoming even more personal and poetic. She's more comfortable in her writing and with her singing. She's really showing her range on this album. It may be her most personal work. I wanted to wait until I watched the full video because I knew you'd see the growth in her music and her as a person. I think having any expectations was the issue. If there's one thing we've learned about Billie, it's that she rarely does what people are expecting. I love this album specially BECAUSE it's not at all what I was expecting.

Totally agree! Grown men judging how a 19 woman dresses needs to stop. These are all her creative decisions. She is her own person and is in control of how she wants to dress and what she wants to do on her own accord. She herself has said she doesn't want to be placed in a box. She said, just because she wears a skirt one day does not mean she will never wear her baggy clothes again. You (recorder) and thousands of other people need to rewatch/listen to 'Not My Responsibility' over and over again until the message goes through. I'm sorry for the rant. I haven't even watched your (probably positive) reactions yet. But your opening lines and reply to megs 82 here kinda irked me and I guess this message is meant for all the haters not really to you. I like that Billie is willing to change her look to suit how she's feeling. We should really normalize both people changing and growing up, and also that sometimes people don't stick to just one look. Sometimes she's into baggy clothes, and sometimes she's into corsets, and sometimes she's into neutral tones. Not too complicated, normal people do it all the time. I really feel you underestimate what it's like to have paparazzo and the kind of fame she has, in regards to NDA specifically. Having people you might be uh... "doing things god wouldn't approve of" with, and then having them turn around and sell that story to a rag mag or something has to be a different level of devastating. I don't blame her- or her team- for exercising caution and making sure anyone she interacts with has her best interests at heart and not their own. Still, having to hold all the people in your life legally responsible just to feel safe... that's gotta take a mental toll. I wouldn't say it's a "trust issue" at all. I'd say it's a fame issue. Musically, I do think NDA is a little similar to bury a friend, but that kinda makes sense. There's this feeling of anxiety and terror in NDA because it's about how it makes you feel not to know who you can trust, and bury a friend was a tribute to horror movies. It's different enough that I love it, personally. For me, Male Fantasy is a super complex, interesting song and it might be my favorite track from the album. Some people think it's from the male perspective, but to me it's just about what it's like when you're healing. You go through numbness, sorrow, rage, disbelief, apathy, and then eventually you have to land somewhere, and I think Male Fantasy really embodies that feeling. You can't un-love someone, and the first step to truly moving on is accepting that fact. Thanks for a fantastic reaction, really appreciated the effort.

Most people have already commented a lot of my thoughts so I’m going to try and remember some of the things that didn’t get mentioned. One of them was the fact that you mentioned Finneas as soon as your talked about production (which makes sense, we all do, especially since we want to make sure he’s getting the credit he deserves) but it made me so happy when you then said “But maybe Billie has been producing as well” because yes! Not only is she literally listed on the vinyl as a producer (more specifically separately as a vocal engineer) but also if one listens to Finneas’ music it’s so abundantly obvious just how much of a role billie’s taste and decision making and creativity is actually the driving force, especially now. I think during her EP times she leaned on him more, and even a bit during the first album (my strange addiction, when the party’s over) but this album is so blatantly Billie to me, I mean even Finneas says that in interviews as well, that there’s a reason her songs are hers and in her name only. So anyway, that made me happy that you brought that up, because I was starting to get a bit irritated with some reactors who would talk as if it’s Finneas’ album that Billie is a singer of. I can’t really put my finger on it but it feels like these particular reactors I’m thinking of feel more comfortable accepting genius from a guy, and it shows in this context. So anyway, to repeat, I appreciated you bringing that up.

I love that different people are drawn to different aspects of artists and their work. For me, this record is light years ahead of anything they've done before ... this is after like 10 listens, mind. It's a phenomenal body of work IMHO. Like a cross between The Beatles White Album, Radiohead's Kid A and Abba The Visitors (Yeah, I said Abba The Visitors. Check it out, you'll see). Weirdly also, the singles seem to take on a new life in the context of the album - I'm even properly enjoying Therefore I Am for the first time, especially after that sick transition from NDA. And Male Fantasy has become the best Billie song to date for me, just edging out When I was Older. I have to admit, though, I simply don't understand how anyone thinks they get to tell a teenage girl, especially one they are unlikely to ever meet, how she should dress or act. I know that's not who you are, dude. Not My Responsibility calls out that very thing. Maybe don't skip it next time? ;) Cheers buddy!
@NaturalReactions3 жыл бұрын
Yessssss! Don’t worry I will be giving it many proper listens. I loved a lot of it. I’ll get back to you on how it grows on me. I can see what you mean about the singles too. Yesss I knew these were coming! I don’t think I or anyone should tell anyone how to dress or act. Ultimately I truly don’t care. It’s just a little disappointing (to me) to see her kind of conform (for lack of a better term) to what is popular and what sells when everything so far was hints of that’s not the direction this was going in. It’s not a tale that hasn’t been seen before. I know everyone here loves her, I’m just saying it’s like a complete 180 from everything before. She of course looks great and can do whatever she wants. Anyway that kind of stuff is sort of just on the surface looks and marketing… the album/music/voice is damn good. Sounds like it will be even better after more listens. If she feels good and feels better these days great! That’s awesome. Also, it’s totally weird to me all the time to ever say anything about any of these people I don’t know. Lol It also literally doesn’t matter at all what I think.
@horsehollerer3 жыл бұрын
@@NaturalReactions Ahh, now i see what you are saying about conforming. I had interpreted it in a very different way. i.e. that everybody had pigeon-holed her as this weird-ass edgy emo kid in baggy clothes, who didn't want to be sexualized, so Billie of course did the exact opposite. I mean, let's face it was just an aesthetic for a couple of shoots, and both were her idea. She was wearing baggy hoodies in all the recent interviews I've seen. I am guessing she did the Vogue cover in reaction to the infamous tank top picture. That must have destroyed her ("Overheated" is about that very picture) and I'm sure she did not want the lasting/defining image of her body to be one of the least flattering photos ever taken. So she exorcized that ghost with some beautiful body images. I mean, I could be very wrong LOL. There's nothing conformist about these songs, that's for sure. Lot's of creative risk-taking, which seems to have split opinion, just as it was supposed to. I was a little worried for this record, but I absolutely love it. I should really learn to trust them!

Dang you folks have great points though! I did also totally see a clip of a live performance today too back in her like ‘goth’ pants and I thought damn… maybe she’s still doing her thing. I didn’t realize it was just maybe something to try. I loved the creative risk taking. Damn maybe that’s what the shoot was too. I saw in her stories the other day she also was really inspired by a woman who sort of had a similar ‘glamorous’ (idk) look. (Forget the woman’s name at the moment) But that also made it make a little more sense with the album cover anyway. I need to listen some more and maybe watch a few recent interviews on this stuff

Ah, finally your album reaction! 🙂👍 First of all, it's good that you listened to the album with headphones. For me this is the only real option to really get all the details of the production (btw, this also applies to the previous album). I've now had 2 weeks to get familiar with HTE and it won't let me go, I'm almost obsessed by it. It's obvious that Billie has become much more confident about her vocals, she's definitely pulling some new tricks here. But fortunately, she kept that ability to transport her emotions through her voice right into the listener's heart (at least mine 😉) like no other artist can rn. Finn's production is sick as always; the album is very versatile as well, there are many different music styles, although the general tone is rather melancholic. But as Billie adresses some very painful experiences in her life in the lyrics, it's no wonder. She also reflects on her life, the fame and what comes with it. It's obvious she's grown up in every way - and yes, that includes sensuality and sexuality. 🙂 I think it's rather hard to judge the tracks individually, because I see the album (like the first one as well) as a whole structure, a well-planned journey, a rollercoaster ride of emotions. The whole thing works best when listening to the songs in the order that the artists chose - no random playback, no skipping. Having done so, I learned to also like "Lost cause", which I didn't very much after its release as a single - but in the album's context, it figures (I'm still not very fond of the mv, though 😉). For me, "Happier than ever" is another fantastic album by the uncomparable creative dreamteam Billie & Finneas (who are still so incredibly young!) which stands on its own feet and shouldn't be compared with its predecessor. I'm glad you like it, too. 🙂👍 THE highlight of the album is the title track - that one blew my mind when I first heard it and it still does. You can literally feel Billie's anger and pain, the song is her masterpiece so far and blurs the line between pleasure and pain when listening. Btw, I'm really glad that the album doesn't finish with this song, bc after that emotional peak there had to be something quieter that makes the listener come down again - and the tenderness and melancholy of the closing track are perfectly suited. Finally, a fun fact: HTE (the song) has made me want something that I didn't know I wanted: A ROCK ALBUM by Billie & Finneas! 🔥🤘🎸 (Sorry that my "comment" became such an essay - but as you know by now I'm a hopeless case when it comes to Billie Eilish. 😄)

I must admit that the only time I was a bit worried about Billie making her own creative decisions was with the lost cause music video. Not the photo shoot, not her hair, or anything else, and I personally thought her other videos were beautiful, impactful, great story telling. Your power is so symbolic and stunning, my future CHEFS KISS, nda is one of my favourite songs ever, and the music video gives me chills. Therefore I am was just in terms of personal taste not really up there as my favourite music videos but it made a lot of sense to me (the middle finger towards fat shamers, the pre-transition hint from bold tag graffiti print to muted neutrals in her clothing, the ducking awesome physicality of her subtle dance movements, the fact that it was all one shot… done during a pandemic, on a phone… ok who am I kidding, I still really liked that music video as well.) but with the lost cause music video, that was the first (and only) time that had me a little worried that she might be moving more towards a more typical pop-casual sexuality focused ensemble situation. But I think in hindsight it’s just something else she wanted to have tried at least. Which is fair. And as soon as the video right after that one came out, any fleeting worries I had dissipated anyway.

NDA - she says she got a secret house when we was 17 and she had her ex boyfriend come over so before he left she made him sign an NDA. The people flickering in the back is reflecting how she’s constantly being watched by people and she has some stalkers which she also mentioned in the song. In her documentary it’s known her boyfriend was abusive and my power, happier than ever, and this one is all about him. She says at the end of NDA “you hit me so hard I saw stars”. In the documentary he’s know to have some aggression issues and he would punch walls and break his hands. However she was with him at the time so he very well could have been letting his anger out on her physically and she was too afraid to tell anyone. Happier than ever - just the toxicity of this relationship is insane. He was manipulative, a liar, a whoa is me kinda dude. He would drink and drive. Make promises he couldn’t keep. Like promising to attend her show at cochlea (which she paid for him to attend) but never showed. Was out partying instead. Promising to not get mad while she explains how she feels, then doing the complete opposite and scaring Billie making her wish she hadn’t spoken at all.

Not to sound like an aggressive broken record or something because I haven't read too many comments and I'm not hoping to sound aggressive, but I think billie is trying to take back power over herself. Like people found ways to sexualize her despite her trying to dress as non revealing as possible with boxy clothing whatnot. Paparazzi still got pictures of her and people still sexualized her. So her embracing it and showing herself off is so that others can't do it to her first, she's doing it on her own terms so the creeps don't have that kind of power. Also in a recent interview she opened up about how as she's grown older she's become less confident which is weird because you'd think it would be the opposite because of how popular she is. So maybe a reason why you think she's kinda going against what she once represented is because she is less confident with what she stood for, and less confident in general which honestly sucks to see considering billie is so popular.

Great reaction as always - this one is a long one so I'm commenting near the start lol, because I want to eat before midnight! I did prefer her old baggy style, but at the end of the day, it's her decision (hopefully), and people's styles usually evolve quickly when they are young. My favourite outfit was the all-black industrial-style boiler suit she wore for one of her photoshoots. Not sure which hair style was my favourite, either the green or blue i guess. The blonde is probably my least favourite. That sound effect at 17:00 sounded a bit like a sample from a stepper motor, no idea whether or not that's where it actually came from though.

Sorry late to the video. I disagreed with a few things you said and a few things I didn’t vibe with or sort of rubbed me up the wrong way. Not gonna get into it all but I’d just like to say that women can be sexy and sexual and dress and act how they like without being made into sexual objects or male fantasies. It’s the idea of a woman as a sex object, particularly in the media, which can cause serious issues in the way women are treated. Which she is partly addressing here. The idea that Billie should be more modest or not pose for a cover of a magazine she wants to because otherwise she can’t complain about being objectified. One, people were doing it anyway and speaking about her body when she would deliberately hide it but two, she is reclaiming her body and sexuality. She is choosing what people see and enjoying herself because people are being the way they are anyway. She can comment on the way she’s treated regardless if she was on vogue completely naked, it doesn’t matter. It gives me sort of “you shouldn’t dress so slutty if you don’t want to be sexually assaulted” vibes like women’s thongs and clothing items still get shown in courtrooms as an argument against them in SA cases so this putting blame onto women for dressing a certain way if they don’t want to be a male fantasy is kind of perpetuating that extremely harmful idea. I’m not saying that you said anything about SA or directly blaming Billie but it’s just a problem which I link that line of thinking with. “What about the vogue cover though?” When she’s talking about male fantasies. Anyway I generally enjoyed! I’m not trying to criticise you as a person, it’s just the main thing on my mind at the end of the video.
