I’ve fought weeds in my flowerbeds for years until an elderly lady told me to remove all my mulch, lay several (about 5-6 single sheets only black and white papers, no color) of news paper on the ground, wet and cover with a good layer of mulch. I never had to worry about weeds again for 3 years. When my weeds started coming through after 3 years I just repeated the process. It works.

Use cardboard boxes. Remove any tape or address stickers, cut open (if desired), lay across ground. I like to use the thick cardboard usually used to ship furniture. One of those will cover a huge area and keep weeds from ever growing in that spot. I suggest you do this BEFORE planting your garden. Been doing this for years and love it. It also breaks down over time, helping you grow soil quicker.

Number 5 works fine for me. I'm not sure why so many people treat it as a hard chore, perhaps if they've got a very large overrgrown garden. A lot of seem to think they have to get backache bending over to do it - but why do it standing up? I just sit there on the ground,in something I don't mind getting a little muddy or grubby,on a nice day in the fresh air with a drink near my side and manoevre around at an easy pace,no rush. It's always good to get the whole root or as near to it as possible out,and I find that most things can be removed with a small trowel and a bit of pulling as low as possible towards the root. I only do two main sessions of weed removal, one around March before the mad spring growth takes place and one at the summer's end when all the summer flowers are just about finished. A certain type of weed does take over a lot of it in the summer regardless, but I then let it be until the end of August/start of September because its little blue flowers attract tons of bees - I had to escort 5 bees out of my place on one day recently,2 honeys and 3 bumbles. One or two straight-laced types think it looks "untidy" but why oh why does your garden needed to be as hoovered and "tidy" as your indoors? And their gardens look drab and brown and lifeless, especially in the autumn, probably in keeping with the contents of their minds. Perhaps it's just the regimented attitudes that some are conditioned into adopting. I do not use any chemicals or poisons, which tend to impoverish the soil by killing many other things besides the things they're targeted to kill. As a consequence the soil in my garden has become rich, supporting a good eco system which is the base for everything else. It does mean that everything grows like crazy, though, which I don't mind at all. Anything that passing birds drop grows and flowers,so that I've obtained some daffodils in the spring that weren't there before and something with bright yellowsummer flowers that someone said is a Rose of Sharon but may not be. I always get different flowers adding splashes of colour all year round, from honeysuckle,Winter Jasmine and some wildflowers that produce little pink and yellow flowers in the middle of winter, through snowdrops in February, bluebells in April-May,deep red and pink roses and an apple tree that produces crisp, sweet, juicy organic apples in September-October. I'm currently getting lots of butterflies - I gently escorted two out of my place back outside this morning, one a Red Admiral type that was sitting on the living room ceiling and the other a pale yellow one that was in the kitchen.

When pulling weeds grip them below the soils surface to get a grip on the roots, prickly weeds don't have prickles there either so no need for gloves. Always water after pulling weeds to avoid the roots of plants you do want being exposed to the air. Just after weeding is a good time to add compost too, pull the weeds, sprinkle your compost and water in, it will fill the holes left by the weeds getting it deeper into the soil.

NUT GRASS. None of this works on Nut Grass. Does anybody have a solution that works? I even put down 8 layers of newspaper with cardboard, plastic garbage bags, and concrete blocks on top, and the nut grass grew through and around it. You can’t pull out the weeds because the root is a “nut” 3 feet or more down, and when one stem breaks off, about 20or more new ones form from the same place. Boiling water killed only what was above the ground, not the root. Salt will render my raised beds useless for growing vegetables. Vinegar didn’t work.
