If you have a glass jar and access to fresh water, you can grow a supply of herbs in water right on your windowsill! While any medium -sized container will do, Mason Jars are particularly cute! Growing procedure for all the herbs is the same. Simply take some healthy, fresh cuttings - Leaving just two sets of leaves at the top of each cutting, and remove the remaining leaves. Then, submerge the cuttings in a few inches of clean-water.
Here is a list of such herbs.
1. Peppermint
Grow peppermint in a jar and snip off a bit to make herbal tea, oil or soup. You can also just enjoy the sweet scent of this fragrant herb Peppermint does well in partially sunny or shady windows.
2. Oregano
You can use fresh oregano straight in pasta sauces, soups and other savory dishes. Just use a pair of kitchen scissors to gently remove a few leaves from the stem. Oregano can grow quite large, so keep an eye on your plant.
3. Sage
Sage has a flavorful scent which makes it a popular choice for holistic purposes. You can also use sage with eggs, chicken, lamb or pineapple. Snip as much as you need and add it to your favorite dish. Sage doesn't need a ton of water and should be kept in moderate sunlight
4. Basil
This popular Italian herb grows well in water and can be used in many different recipes including sauces and soups. Make sure your basil jar gets about 6-8 hours of sunlight per day.
5. Stevia
This hardy herb prefers a bit of sun but can grow just as well in shadier areas. You can use the leaves off of this herb to sweeten your tea of coffee naturally! You can also create a powder from the leaves to use as a sweetener too.
6.Thyme
Thyme is a versatile herb. It will flower or you can harvest them before they flower, hang the stems to dry the leaves and then remove the leaves to use in cooking. Thyme needs plenty of sunlight, so set those jars in a bright window.
7.Rosemary
This flavorful herb does well in sunlight or partially shaded areas. It will grow better in full sunlight though. Use your growing’s to spice up your favorite chicken dish!
8.Lemon Balm
You can use the lemon balm herb to create an herbal tea that helps reduce anxiety, relieve symptoms of indigestion and helps make sleep a little easier to come by. Give this plant plenty of sunlight.
9.Chives
This onion family member is super easy to grow and you can use it in a ton of dishes. Make sure this herb has plenty of water and sunlight for best growth results.

A friend gave us some spearmint for tea. It was so good that I was going to ask for some plants, but I did not want to wait, and the spearmint looked so vibrant that I felt confident I could use one of the stems with leaves to start a plant. I cut off all but the top four leaves, place the stem in water for 3 days, then planted it in soil and kept it watered. There was never a moment when it looked like it might wilt, it has been steadily growing, and has started to produce new leaves. Now I am waiting for it to begin to propagate new plants.

I just started growing herbs as indoor plants that I take outside when the sun is out. My first 3 herbs are rosemary, basil and mint (although I'm not sure what the variety of mint is). I have a 4th herb, en route from Australia, called Brahmi (which I believe is also known as moneywart). So far, easy to care for: monitor for proper water amounts and proper amounts of sunlight. I enjoyed this video as it is short, to the point and informative.

There is a difference between growing in plain water and hydroponics as shown in the example. You might get a few roots but the plants need a brief reprieve from constant water, and also need nutrients. Roots don’t like sunlight either.

I had a purple basil in a jar on my kitchen window sill for almost a year. I decided to plant it outside and actually did a couple of cuttings, rooted them the same way, then planted them all outside. The two cuttings survived and the mother plant didn't. It was too used to living in water so it got too much shock being moved to soil. The young roots of the fresher cuttings were more easily adaptable to the new environment.

I started growing scallions out of curiosity and because I can never get enough of them. Cut off the top third of the stem for your salad then plop them in a jar of water and put under a strong light in the kitchen or on a sunny window sill. The center will grow every day so cut them as you need them. Eventually they grow thinner but will have more juice.

This is called the "kratky method" of hydroponics. You will need hydroponic nutrients in order for your plant to actually grow, the water itself does not contain the nutrients required to sustain life let alone grow any bigger. Also if you wanna increase the survival rate of your cuttings make sure to pick up some rooting gel this will assist the plant in creating roots in order to actually grow instead of just sitting there slowly getting more brown till it dies.

I put some wierd plant only in water thinking it wasn't going to survive in the kitchen/saw it as temporary decor. Boy was I wrong. It's been a year and has grown so much. I grow rosemary and oregano at my front door. They plants love sun and lots of water. Just huck some fert on it occasionally. Oregano can be dried in a bath towel under a fan. I pick the sticks out and have tons of it for spaghetti sauces.

I think that: a) You'll really eventually need to add some micronutrients to the water. Plants do need more than water and sunlight to grow, blossom, and eventually bare fruit. Even the aquatic plants do. b) some of the herbs mentioned are xerophytes. They may grow root from a stalk in water, but they won't thrive from water alone. Examples from the vid: Sage and Rosemary. You see those naturally growing on rocky, dry ground or limestone, exposed to the direct sunlight most of the day.

I'm only interested in starting things in water. I have been successful starting spearmint and basil and tomato plants in water but my current experiment with parsley and cilantro as someone claimed they root in water on the internet is not going well after 3 weeks. Once the plants rooted in water, form enough roots I plant them in potting soil. I know I could babysit stem cuttings but this is easier for me.

I do cuttings/clones all the time for many plants even some trees. In my 20's when i first stated cloning my medicinal herbs (cough cough) i used to use a cloning/rooting powder. but have learned that you really dont need it. all you need to do is make sure they get enought light and that the water stays warm. i used to use a heating pad under my cuttings/clones. now i usually ony do it in the spring and summer so the water stay warm anyways.

NPK when using fertilizer N is nitrogen and always the first number and what you want for starting roots P is for phosphorus and the second number and you will chose a fertilizer with the higher 2nd number once it flowers or fruits, 3rd number is pot ash Miracle grow is normally 20-20-20 but once you flower you want to jump to like a 10-20-10

What Do the Numbers on Fertilizer Mean? The three numbers on fertilizer represents the value of the three macro-nutrients used by plants. These macro-nutrients are nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K), or NPK for short. The higher the number, the more concentrated the nutrient is in the fertilizer. A fertilizer that contains only one macro-nutrient will have “0” in the other values. For example, if a fertilizer is 10-0-0, then it only contains nitrogen. These fertilizer numbers, also called NPK values, should appear on any fertilizer you purchase, whether it is an organic fertilizer or a chemical fertilizer. What is NPK and Why is it Important? So now that you know what the numbers on fertilizer mean, you need to know why NPK is important to your plants. All plants need nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium to grow. Phosphorus (P) - Phosphorus is largely responsible for root growth and flower and fruit development. For example, if you are growing leafy vegetables, you may want to apply a fertilizer that has a higher nitrogen number to encourage leafy growth. Out of: Sage, rosemary, lemon grass, tulsi, purple basil, thyme and basil; the last three were the only ones I was able to root through this method with the last one dying shortly after potting. My basil and thyme are doing great, however. There has to be a trick to each one. I know certain plants can be propagated in a variety of ways so I wonder if the exact point which is to be rooted differs from herb to herb...

sage can be used with tea, like peppermint! the arabs use it well. they dry the sage leafs and use it in tea. its healthy and help with stomchake!

Water alone will not give you "endless supply". Plants need minerals to grow which are not supplied by water on it's own. Basic biology. It will grow for a while but start to lose taste and eventually it will die. I came here for the thumbnail because it shows an interesting way to keep plants watered. Wasn't mentioned.

We have an " Aero-Garden " hydroponic growing system. Beyond the available and numorous planting packs, many herbs grow really well in this little unit year round ! I should also mention that it has an intrical grow light as part of it's design. Fresh lettuce year round is great as well ! We love it !

Usually the creepy computer voice indicates someone who either can't speak English and composed their video using Google translate or someone who speaks English but with an atrocious accent. Should such people be banned from making KZbin videos until they (A) learn to speak English, (B) lose the accent, or (C) pay/persuade someone to narrate for them? For many these options aren't realistic options at all. Don't you hate it when you dial tech support and someone with a unintelligibly thick foreign accent answers the phone? Frankly I'd prefer the robot voice.

Agree. It prefers dry-ish soil. The best way to propograte it is to clip off piece of mature plant and plant it in well drained soil and water once a week.

Just buy a nice piece of ginger from the fresh food section at the grocery store. Lay the root on top of a large planter of potting soil & lightly water. It will sprout from the eyes of the piece and root all by itself and then you can transplant it in the ground.

Nice sunny spot, water & patience. I was able to clip off a not-so-woody segment and let it do its thing. It started to root about 7-10 days after the clip into water. I clipped off about 8 pieces and 1 was stable enough to carry on. I have a nice producing plant surrounded by oregano. Good luck!!

@@carpediemlise, you have to change the water every day, otherwise the plant rots. Maybe your could leave it 2 or 3 days but changing the water every day works. Even plain water kept in a glass for a time will go slimey. I have managed to get garlic and a pineapple top to start making roots - keep the water clean.

Actually, coriander refers to the seed. Cilantro refers to the leaf. Same plant. Don't see why it wouldn't be worth trying as suggested in the video.
