Thank you so much to Endel for sponsoring this video!! The first 100 people to download ENDEL by clicking bit.ly/3DXRzxr will gain free access for 1 week :D This video is a little different to normal - I mainly use public domain deep sea footage from other major organisations for my deep sea series, but in this video all the footage is my own! Rock pools are incredibly beautiful and are so easily accessible, yet they're still really overlooked. I decided to head out and film this on-location to highlight just how close you can come to the marine world by visiting rock pools and coming face to face with this staggering ecosystem yourself. So, I apologise if the change in style or cinematography is a little jarring - this is not a 'new normal' for the deep sea series, and the usual videos with ROV footage and alien-like creatures will return, but nonetheless this is a project I'm very excited to share with you all :)

As a child I loved rockpools you could find so many interesting things in there! It’s a shame things just aren’t as bustling as they used to be! I’ve seen your videos from the beginning and watching your channel grow is exciting! You always had great content using the sources you had, but now you’ve added a much more personal touch. I love seeing your passion for nature, the family member a lot of use tend to neglect. I don’t want to say you would be great to fill Sir David Attenborough’s shoes (there isn’t a way to really haha) because I feel on a human level you are both on par with each other. Rather he has much more experience and wisdom that comes with time. So I can’t wait for you to experience more and more of this world and gain more wisdom. Thanks for watching, Val. Stick with it and push through, I really hope it becomes more manageable soon and that you’re able to enjoy the course more as time goes on. It really is worth it - the oceans are such a breathtaking other world, and in the end the hard work will all pay off. Wishing you all the best!!!! I too have just started my marine bio studies, so I think we’re in very similar situations. The best way to keep focused is to just try to remind yourself of why you’re doing this, of what made you fall in love with marine life in the first place. When I was a little kid, my brothers and I couldn’t WAIT to go to the beach in Florida every year. My brothers wanted the waves and the sand, but I would not rest until one of the elders that went with us took me to a bay or anywhere there were rock pools. One year, the week that we went, the current brought in TONS of this mixture of Sargasso weed and some other fine green algae. The entire 10 mile stretch of beach was completely covered along with about 20’ of the water. EVERYONE was all bummed out, EXCEPT ME! I LOVED it! I was in heaven with all of the creatures and sea life that it brought in with it! I’ll never forget that summer. And neither will all of my family(for different reasons!) As a kid, my parents would take me on holidays all along the Mediterranean coast and I would together, with my brother, always scoure the tide pools, collecting all lifeforms we could find. They always struck us as mysterious microcosms, much more interesting than our own, barren sandy north-sea beaches in Holland. We used scoop-nets, our bare hands or a clothespin attached to a rope and outfitted with bait to lure the crabs. We would keep all organisms in a bucket the whole day and would always draw a crowd of kids to see what we had found. We once had a baby octopus who released ink into the bucket, rendering the entire scene pitch black. Then after, he clambered out and vanished... Ahh the memories, such good times exploring!
@NaturalWorldFacts3 жыл бұрын
Those are some truly wonderful recollections! I had similar childhood experiences on England’s rockpools, but never found something as exciting as an octopus! Yet still, even the isopods as shrimps kept me enthralled for hours. I never wanted to leave, but the tide always forced my visits to be cut short. It’s incredible - a breathtaking world that renews and replenishes every few hours. An entire ecosystem that is birthed and destroyed each day!

@@NaturalWorldFacts It's been a long time (I'm 34) but I'd say: sea urchins. If you reach below their spikes and apply gentle but firm pressure, they come off the rock giving you a look at their bellies lined with manifold suckers on spaghetti-ish arms. Put them on the shore and see their spikes glisten and dance in the sunlight as they slowly make their way back to the nearest body of water. Also, hermit crabs are fun too. They'll come popping out to have a look at their surroundings if you leave the shell alone, face-up for a bit. Surely worth a visit sometime. Keep it up with the great content!✌

Every summer holiday for eight years was spent in this beautiful town, and many hours were spent climbing around the rock pools between Anstruther and Cellardyke, bucket and net in hand, a crab line and bait for the deeper pools. It was a sensory overload - waves crashing in the distance, the pungent smell of the seaweed, the taste of salt hanging in the air, jagged rocks underfoot, slipping and sliding, looking for any purchase, as my younger brother and I clambered down to where we were told not to go. Rain was no deterrent - you were getting wet anyway, so the weather wasn't an issue. Wonderful video.

I took for granted those little beaches for the longest time but now I'm so glad I could experience them as a child. There's something so wonderful about finding little crabs, limpets, hearing the calls of seagulls, wading in the frigid cold water (with rainboots of course, or your feet get cut up) and just seeing a part of nature different than your standard park or backyard. I think spending time on those beaches is what gave me the fascination I have with the ocean now.

I always liked these mini beach ecosystems , they are as interesting as the oceans.

Beautiful video! Really cool to see something a little different from your usual vids. Beautiful footage, beautiful voice and amazing commentary. Hope you get to narrate nature docs in the future. I still cannot believe you are as young as you are. I can't wait to see how you grow and progress as you get older seeing as how high caliber these videos are now.

Thank you - I’m incredibly excited at the thought of working on proper big budget documentaries someday. The natural world has astounded me since I was very young, so the dream is to someday work in the field of zoology or marine biology professionally. Thank you for being so supportive and helping me reach that dream right here on KZbin :)

The presence and gravitas in your voice and your delivery of the information you provide rivals David Attenborough. It was surprising to see how young you actually are. I hope you continue sharing your knowledge and your soothing tones with the world.

Really takes me back to the times my family took me foraging at the sea. Really appreciating how here how every orghanism is specializied in a certain way to survive and fill in a role or a niche for a working ecosystem. Also your narrations are beautiful, I didnt expect your voice to be that soothing in natura as well :D

This video is so nostalgic for me. I spent my days as a kid trawling through rockpools with my family, finding crabs shrimps, nudibranchs, fish and winkles. When I wasn't doing that, I was usually watching some Brian Cox documentary, which your narration style really reminds me of. Really enjoyed that, thanks!

Truly impressive work you do, regardless of your age. Lean into your passion and don’t worry about anybody else’s opinions. I’m turning 27 next week and I wish I had learned this way sooner. What people call “nerdy” in high school usually becomes “passionate” in adulthood, and those people are often really successful in their field and seem to be quite happy/fulfilled with their work. I’m confident you will be successful in this field, keep up the great work! P.s. tell your friend/camera man to slow down the panoramic sweeping shots if y’all do this again. It’s hard to do in the moment but my dizzy brain appreciates it!

Oh, is that what you look like. I didn't know anything about you based on your voice: old or young, male or female, race, etc - for me that worked because it could be anyone telling me about the natural world. I always find your videos inforative and calming. This one in particular brings back very fond memories of exploring rock pools as a child and the sense of wonder I felt for the natural world. Don't ever lose that, no matter how many problems there are in the envionment (external and internal). Bless you

What a wonderful video! And I have to say you're pretty brave, I think I wouldn't have been able to leave my feet in the water with the shrimps there nibbling away, haha! I'm far too ticklish and a bit unnerved by small creeping things! The footage was quite well done also - you put in a lot of effort here and it shows! Thank you for sharing your interest with us and for keeping up this channel, it can't be easy for you!

Thank you so much Sonja, I’m a sucker for creepy crawlies and little critters so it was an easy task, but I can understand why you’d be hesitant to dip your feet in these waters haha 😂 especially with so many large crabs lurking under the rocks!! Thanks so much for the support by the way - your comment made me smile :)
