Nature-based Solutions Intervention in Gledic Mountains, Serbia

Climate change is one of the greatest challenges that nature and humanity face today. One of the most effective ways to mitigate and adapt to climate change is through the implementation of Nature-based Solutions (NbS). By applying NbS, forest landscapes can be restored, reducing the risk of floods, enhancing other ecosystem functions, and ultimately increasing the resilience of local communities, improving living conditions, and raising the standard of living.
Over the past ten years, Kraljevo, Serbia, has been affected by numerous disasters. Following the major floods that hit much of Serbia and the region in 2014, significant flood damage was recorded in the Kraljevo area in 2016, 2019, and 2020. After a detailed analysis conducted by a team of experts within the ADAPT initiative, in close cooperation with the City of Kraljevo and representatives of relevant local institutions, Gledić village in the Gledić Mountains was selected as the site for implementing NbS and forest landscape restoration in the Kraljevo municipality.
NbS interventions in Gledić are being implemented as part of the project ADAPT: Nature-based Solutions for Resilient Societies in the Western Balkans. ADAPT is an initiative funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) and implemented by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), in partnership with organizations in Serbia and five other economies in the Western Balkans. The common goal is to enhance the resilience of ecosystems and human communities to climate change and disaster risks through the application of NbS.
