Thank you so much for your show. The colour of the show is abit blur but like always amazing and I always like it. Sadly in Australia where I live not much orchids but that's OK I can't have too much. Thank you so very much Nelson.

You’re very welcome. Sorry you saw it blurry. Perhaps try playing it again to see if it calibrates. Sometimes live shows calibrate once completely uploaded.

Great live! They have so many beautiful things at their show. It was fun to tag along with you. I found your conversation with Smiley very interesting. Can you point me towards the conversation that you had with her previously where she talks about how she cares for her orchids. I would love more info on what she uses. Thank you!

Beautiful Orchids. Do you know if any of the vendors ship to Guam?
@naturenel Жыл бұрын
I wouldn’t know. Best is to reach out to them. What I hear allot is international shipping of orchids is very expensive so many nurseries only ship nationally. But there are some out there that may ship to you. It’s all in the expense of the shipping.

I couldn't grow the way smiley does. I agree with her in theory 100%. The problem is the plants we get have so many problems when we buy them. It literally is crazy. You hear about antibacterial resistance all the time and how bugs are becoming superbugs, virusses are getting stronger than 200 years ago etc. I tried smiley's approach and I completely lost the joy of growing. IT was only once I got the nearly radioactive stuff in that the joy of growing came back. When your plants have problems and you check on them and every month an orchid has died its just no fun. If on the other hand every time you check an orchid is flowering instead it makes far more fun. So yeah 400 years ago I'd be growing like smiley. These days I found it impossible to do that. At least for my standards.

I agree with you 100% on your comment. With that said, it best to first incorporate natural care with chemicals. You want to transition into it as you learn more and more on clean growing. Also, if you keep them outdoors as I do, it’s near to impossible to go 100% chemical free. Smiley dedication to her plants is amazing, but we need to also consider that she grows indoors inside a controlled environment. This makes it way easier. For example, I live a couple miles off Big Cypress Everglades National Park. I get the stranges insects and pests from the wild. So I’m always checking my orchids. If you have a collection big or small, you have check your orchids weekly. I do mine almost daily. That’s why keeping orchids is not for everyone. It’s a very exquisite hobby with high maintenance. We are basically trying to grow something that’s far from its natural environment, and then on top of that most people try to pot all their orchids. We all know orchids mainly grow sideways off tree canopies. Keep using what works for you responsibly. I know in a perfect world natural growing is best, but we are not there yet. I still use all my chemicals, only this time I’m learning to only use them in the effected area and try not to spray all over to avoid any overspray in the greenhouses.

@@naturenel Thanks Nelson. I'm impressed you wrote me such a great answer. There is also the idea that stronger orchids build up more of a resistance to pests which we should be taking advantage of. The problem for me was when I first started growing orchids the number one advice was feed weakly and be very careful of fertilizer salts. As a result the first few years my orchids were weak, spindly and more susceptible. Every year I carefully increased the amount. Once I reached the level I wa'0s feeding my houseplants I realized cymbidiums can handle even more than my houseplants! Weak feeders? Like said weak plants attract pests. strong plants are more resilient. How do I get stronger plants? I am up to feeding 5 times more than the first year I was growing orchids. I gave my phals a cool down in autumn as you are told. All my phals died the first year. I stopped the cool down nonsense and grew them like they were growing in florida and they did much better. Now that I am feeding them as much as my houseplants they are growing greener too. IT's just I was literally brainwashed to be scared of fertilizing too strongly. And that is what my orchids needed. But at the same time my roots were developing brown burn markings and people were telling me I was overfertilizing when I was already underfertiling by 500%. It was all very confusing. I then discovered the brown markings were unrelated to my fertilizing!! Some of the advice I got online... Yeah it was costing me orchids. I had to throw the grow advice online out the window. Had to teach myself from scrap. Now feed my orchids mediumly, not weekly, They are slowly getting stronger. Following you has helped a lot too.
