The Baikal Reserve is located on the southern shore of Lake Baikal, in Buryatia. When it was created, it had one territory - in the central part of the Khamar-Daban ridge. Later, two reserves entered under his protection - Kabansky in the swampy delta of the Selenga River and Altacheysky - in the dry forest-steppe.
The Kabansky Reserve has been under the protection of the Baikal Reserve since 1985. The fore-delta serves as the main filter of the river. Water is carefully filtered through dense thickets of aquatic plants. In the foredelta there are many shallows and islands where birds nest. Cormorants, herons, greaves, gray gulls - every year scientists conduct a count of colonies.
The main territory of the reserve is located in the central part of the Bolshoi Khamar-Daban ridge. In mid-September, deer are counted, in which the rut has begun. Two subspecies live in the reserve: deer and red deer. Reindeer live above the forests in the mountain tundra.
The path to the reserve lies through the village of Taezhny. From the village another thirty kilometers up the river Temnik. Temnik is the largest and one of the most beautiful rivers in the reserve. It separates the Big and Small Khamar-Daban ranges. The southern border of the Baikal Reserve passes along it.
