The Baikal Reserve is located on the southern shore of Lake Baikal, in Buryatia. When it was created, it had one territory - in the central part of the Khamar-Daban ridge. Later, two reserves entered under his protection - Kabansky in the swampy delta of the Selenga River and Altacheysky - in the dry forest-steppe.
The Altacheysky reserve is located far from Baikal, on the slopes of the Zagansky ridge, where piercing Baikal winds do not reach. Most of the territory is covered with forests. Below, along the slopes of the mountains, the boundless steppes of Transbaikalia begin.
Forests only at first glance seem empty. If you get up early in the morning, you can see the amazing action of spring nature. This is the current of capercaillie and black grouse. Two subspecies of capercaillie live in Transbaikalia: common and stone.
Black grouse is smaller than capercaillie and more mobile. The battles don't stop. During the fights, they do not even have time to sing, only cooing in annoyance. The current lasts until about ten o'clock in the afternoon. The birds are very tired. During the day they will feed and gain strength until the next morning. This will continue for several weeks.
