This is a story about how people are trying to save the West Siberian population of Siberian Cranes. Siberian Cranes breed chicks in Yamal in the lower reaches of the Ob, and winter in Iran or India. There are only twenty of them. In 1979, at the initiative of the International Crane Conservation Fund, a nursery was established in the Oksky Reserve. Based on the experience of American scientists, a program was developed to restore the population of the West Siberian Siberian Cranes "Flight of Hope". Every morning, the staff of the nursery take on the role of the parents of the Siberian Cranes. The chicks who are to become wild birds must not guess that they have been raised by humans. When the birds grow up, they begin to be taught to fly behind a hang-glider, like a leader. Then the Siberian Cranes will be sent to the lower reaches of the Ob River to continue training there.
The most important stage of the program is the release of Siberian Cranes into the wild. But first, they have to go through a difficult journey behind a hang-glider from the lower reaches of the Ob River to the south of the Tyumen region. Here the Siberian Cranes will join a flock of wild Common Cranes to go together for the winter.
