Then you would have a " hay" day, in my barn! lol. It is an old hay barn, that I put a stall in for emergencies, which I have never had, Knock on Wood, and the rest is still all open. I don't have a tractor, and the horses have had access to it at will 24/7. Inside, you will see a few piles of manure but all the rest of the barn is like peat moss, from their constant movement in there in the summer. The rain and snow only get at the doorways, which there is no doors that are closed, so it is basically dry for a 20' x 20 ' area. I have dug down to see how deep the " peat moss " goes, and stopped at 6 inches and was still pulling it up. I didn't want to leave a deep soft spot in the barn, so that is how deep I dug, but didn't hit bottom as they say.

Hi I'm really glad for this. I've seen the vids b4. Rewatched then just now. Pretty concise. I had made a huge pile 8'×8'×2' ... too much for me to turn. But over maybe 4 months, it's partially broken down. I started relocating it, and this turns out to be the 'first' flip. Not far to go, again. I'm gonna make smaller piles. We just bought a house, and selling compost is a way I get some extra income (and exercise).

Oh my goodness...my compost has stuff you said NOT to have...too wet and hot. It formed that white clump of something. We have been hitting hard with rain, so can't really let it aired out like I wanted to so I loosely put tarp over it till the rain pass then I will let it aired out. Oh well, great learning curve for me since it's my first SUPPOSE TO BE 18 days...lol, now it's "who knows" how many day compost...haha. Thank you.

Where I am I have little to no green right now (Idaho), how successful do you think I'd be with just poop and brown? I'm trying it now because what can it hurt? Besides my back but all the calories I've burnt....win win. Lol. I have a mountain of 💩 that I need to do something with.

I build up my compost pile slowly. I only use kitchen scraps and yard waste, no manure. It turns out beautiful, just not in 18 days.

I finally found a 6 tine manure fork! Seems that there’s a shortage around here. Mine was the last one at Tractor Supply. Compost pile, here I come!

So today is day 18 but due to my mistake using municipal water, the pile is slowing coming around. Got up to 144 degrees before I flipped it. I noticed that the cow manure hasn’t really broken down much. It’s still very green inside. I smushed it to bring out all that inner goodness. Sooner or later it’ll be compost. I’m determined to use this as learning and correcting the next batch. You two make it look easy.

I would not use the stuff in charcoal. Biochar is pretty simple to make.

What can I use if I do t have manure? I cld pry source some locally but for sure where I live the animals wld have eaten hay or straw that had been sprayed with herbicides (roundup) 😞 I’m starting a small worm farm just to have decent compost as a side project 😂

This system of composting need manure in order for it to be finished in 18 days. I’d still use the manure from the animals you described. The act of composting is going to lock up toxins and make them inert.

You can just do like these guys did and use compost to make compost (Cheaters) lol. There's always some poop from something inside compost- it doesn't have to be from farm animals. Alternatively you can use dog poop or just start collecting your own and add it to the greens. You'd just want to make sure it gets nice and hot though for it to cook off any pathogens, seeds, blow fly eggs etc. ;)

Nitrogen sources like the green grass do contain water. Of course, in a drought situation it may be less than optimal. However, the tarp should help to retain whatever moisture is naturally in your initial component materials.

I did a compost bin a week ago. After about 5 days of nothing happening, I got frustrated and just dumped everything on the ground (and it smelled a lot). After dumping my rotting materials, I got 5 sacks of garden soil and just dumped 'em on top of my rotting materials. I then watered the whole pile after wards. I'm now on day 3. Everyday since I dumped everything on the ground, I continuously added kitchen scraps, brown materials. Still no heat. Question : I know it' s gonna breakdown eventually but rotting materials is just 1 sack worth while the soil I put in as I said was 5 sacks worth. If I keep turning them every other day, will the whole thing become organic compost or will it just be considered as garden soil enriched with composted material? Sorry had to ask because I don't know the difference between garden soil and compost.

Compost is decomposed organic while soil is typically inorganic clay, sand, and silt. Message us on Instagram with photos of your pile and I’ll be able to give you better advice. Off the top of my head, I don’t think your pile is big enough and/or it’s gone anaerobic. If it smells, you probably need a source of carbon in the mix. -William

Hey There! I just stumbled on your Chanel and am so stoked I did. I live in Arizona and coming up with green for my compost is ...somewhat of a challenge, it's made Composting something I really havnt wanted to learn how to do, putting it completely off all together. Until I saw your videos, now I want to learn but feel like my questions are kind stupid. Anyway. I've got chicken bedding with pine chips and poop. Horse poo and tree branches and aloe . Are these things enough to do 19bday compost?

I don’t know what kind of water you’re using, but hopefully it’s not city water. I hope you’re using well water. City water has chlorine in it, which kills beneficial soil microbes. Also, layering it, like you did, is fine when you build a pile, but you should immediately knock it down and mix everything together. Then put it in your cage. Another way, would be to use some type of container to measure out your ratios, mixing it as you go. The best ratio is probably one 1/4 to 1/3 green material, and 3/4 to 2/3 brown material. Get a compost thermometer and flip the compost when the heat comes down to about 100°. I use 2” x 4” x 5’ welded wire fabric, which is a little stiffer than what you have there.

The only way to know if it’s ready to turn in four days is to have monitored the temperature every day... there’s a formula for that.
