If you have never done nature study in your homeschool, and feel totally lost on how to start, this video is for you. I’d never done nature study when we started, wasn’t really even interested in “nature” or outdoors yet, and had 3 tiny kids I couldn’t easily lug into the wilderness.
Getting started with nature study at home can be simple. One, get outside more. Try and do a weekly walk where you look at things, point out what you see, and ask questions in front of your kids. Then, as you can, look up answers.
In the video I recommend a free app by National Geographic called Seek. It’s a nature identification app. We use it for bugs, plants, fungi, and more.
We started out (and still loosely use) Exploring Nature With Children curriculum which is a great nature study that holds your hand, has weekly topics, activities, book lists, a nature poem, and more. It grows with your kids and has extension activities so you can use it year after year.
You can also just visit your library for books on any nature topic. Bees, butterflies, water cycle, trees, flowers, etc.
Mostly, I don’t want nature study to be another school subject. I want it to be a part of life that we do naturally for fun! To better understand the world we live in and God’s beautiful creation.
