The Lake District, renowned for its picturesque views, beautiful lakes, and towering peaks, has long been a source of inspiration for artists and poets alike-most notably William Wordsworth.
[Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News...]
However, this iconic landscape is set for a dramatic transformation, thanks to a £5 million investment which aims to restore temperate rainforest to Skiddaw. Ruben Reuter heads there to find out how centuries of human intervention has shaped the landscape, and how the project will allow nature to take back control.

I can spend far more time and enjoyment wandering through a native rainforest than walking across a bare grassy hillside. The density of wildlife and visual interest is thousands of times greater. And they’d both be just as beautiful to look at from a distance

@@dolphinliam888 Hi and thanks for your response. I understand that ash trees/saplings under 4 years old don't show signs of the disease. Best check that though, rather than take it as a fact as I'm merely a keen amateur tree planter who planted 1,000 trees on my smallholding. In the meantime, I will check to see what the RSH have to say on the issue of ash-recovery. I gather elm are now returning, so maybe I'll see disease free ash in my lifetime.

@paulsyms2142
@paulsyms2142 12 күн бұрын
The species mix that is used will have to consider what was there before, and what will be best for biodiversity. My guess is that it will be centred on the two oaks, birch, and possibly willows, rowan, whitebeams, etc. I don't know about beech, which I think is a latecomer to the British flora, and where I live (in Hampshire, not the Lakes), isn't very good at supporting biodiversity. [Edit] There's still a disease problem with elm and ash. However, I don't know the extent to which elm featured in the pre-human rainforests in the region - I'm sure Wikipedia would know.

I have a few reservations here as the scenery in the Lake district is stunning, a lot to do with the exposed peaks and dramatic crags. There is nothing worse masking views and landscapes by too much vegetation, as in the USA where you rarely can see the landscape, such as the Cascades. I am all in favour in planting more deciduous forest in the valleys and removal of conifers as they are rubbish for diversity. Places like the Howgills and eastern fells could do with some oaks, elms planted (if possile in the valleys. Rain forest probably a bit far. Should look at it as a nationwide issue though. Obviously all the surface has been man made but some of this is good. dry Stone walls for example need repairing and wooden fences excluded. So I think there is room for eco system enhancement but a fine balance needs to be struck. Am I wrong? I am old so will be dead before anything happens, but thinking of the future gens.... My dad was on national park committees in Yorkshire and there are a lot of human pressures. Tolls for outsiders maybe a good idea, but that penalises poorer people that benefit a lot from the countryside.

While I take the point about the views and their value for tourism, a £5m budget and one mountain won't make a big difference to that in the bigger scheme of things. The plus for biodiversity, and restoring a habitat that we've all but destroyed for extensive grazing, will far outweigh that. When I've visited the States, it often costs $5 to visit a state or national park - I'm very happy to pay that, in view of the fact that they provide facilities for me to visit. If you're worried about poorer people not being able to pay, then there's always concession schemes, for example making it free for holders of an OAP bus pass.

So many of the fells in the lakes will remain bare though for the foreseeable future so if bare hills are more your thing you won’t be short of them in the UK. I think most people will be happy with a little bit of diversity in the scenery. On a news article I read about this as well they said they won’t be foresting the peaks or the peat bogs anyway so you’ll still be able to get a stunning view at the top of the mountain

A dog cannot ever be a horse because they are different species on different branches of the evolutionary tree - the only thing they share is that they are mammals. Homosapiens come in all different shades, same as dogs have different markings and coat colours. We're all humans, and nobody owns the earth, we just scamper around on it for a few years before passing on.
