So why are you rooting for this specific one to suffer for whatever previous experience you have about other cuckoos? From a scientific perspective if "parasite" chicks like this survive, there is a high chance such behaviour will be more common from its future babies, where the intruder doesn't aggressively kick off the real babies etc. That's evolution for the better!

The cuckoo is either a very late hatcher or it has been deliberately placed in the nest in some kind of "experiment". Normally the egg is laid by the Cuckoo's mother in the unsuspecting host bird's nest and it is timed to hatch out 2 days earlier than the genuine chicks do. They also develop more quickly and are already twice the size of the host bird's chicks, that's if the host eggs get chance to hatch out. That's only if the cuckoo chick hasn't already heaved the eggs out of the nest, using its specially developed back. It is believed that the featherless baby cuckoo has a highly sensitive area on its back which when it comes into contact with anything, it gives it the urge to push it away and out of the nest with its muscular back.When its feathers grow they cover this activation spot and it doesn't have the same eviction urge. Some breeds of cuckoo are happy to grow up with the host chicks, provided they are being fed. But normally they will eject the eggs first or if they are behind their schedule they throw the hatchlings out of the nest with their superior physique. They then have the ability to mimic the sound of the host's brood, which triggers the foster parents instincts to feed the cuckoo. The experts also believe that the cuckoo chick can develop a similar design to its inner throat as the target host chick in order to fool the parents into feeding it. The cuckoo chick in this nest has a totally different colour inside its open beak and this might explain why the host bird isn't feeding it.
@ryomensukuna8590 Жыл бұрын
Nice explanation. Thanks

You say this brood was messed with by someone adding a cuckoo chick, but i've seen cuckoo with other hatchlings and the cuckoo is always easy to indentify and had a red color inside the beak that other hatchlings do not have. Also if as you say cuckoo would be so efficient at killing the host bird hatchlings they would push their host specie to extinction. So sometimes they loose in their parasiting plot, this video might be such a case. And who says the mother isn't feeding the cuckoo, maybe she makes sure all get fed.

@Intrepid_Explorer3 ай бұрын
@ciontachthecthonicchampion3576 You are not mistaken; emotions are very much real even in wild animals. The reason the cuckoo appears so furious is not out of simple hunger, but because of its instincts. Because the cuckoo has evolved to possess parasitic instincts, it instinctively knows that the birds that raise it are not its actual parents. Thus, unlike the other chicks, the cuckoo's singular impulse is to abuse and annoy the birds that raise it into giving it all the food possible, as it instinctively has no love for them.

Depends on the cocoo species. Cocoos are a very interesting species some do not push out their silblings, some do. Might also be an individual abnormality. Best guess is that the mother does not feel stimulated to feed the strange chick because she has the right stimuli in her nest (her own chicks) and they have a different color inside their mouth. Birds get stimulated by the pattern and colors inside the mouth of their chicks. There are some real wierd chicks with freaky mouth patterns out there.

There is no blame in this situation. We filter the animal world through our morals sometimes. Manipulation, exploitation, especially it being so targeted, makes people a little bit more angry than usual. That chick, however, is designed to kill the rest of the chicks in the nest. I am secure in saying that that is a particularly evil animal. It's just so intimately cruel. I mean, too bad so sad? As long as both species populations are sustainable then I'll tolerate it.

Okay fair enough to say that the mother bird wasn't impressed by the cuckoo bird begging, and blocked every go to come first before the others and yet still trying to inch forward in the nest the mother went, "nope" and fed her babies. The fact that I appreciate how she got so offended by tge baby cuckoo attacking her also seemed as if she was about to fight but kept her composure

This is an example of birds evolving to be smarter about what’s in their nest, on normal circumstances the mother would give all her attention to the Cuckoo baby but instead she ignores them and opts to feed only her own children, since in a normal circumstance the cuckoo would have thrown the babies out of the nest and increased the odds of outgrowing the nest entirely

Still....the mother bird did not have the heart to throw the impostor out perhaps she will give him minimally possible till he leaves the next, so in that way mother bird is compassionate. Thanks for sharing this wonderful video, for once we have a smart mother bird.

This appears to be evolution in progress. The Cuckoo bird filled a niche by becoming a parasite in the nests of other bird species. But it seems some species have developed the ability to recognize an intruder in their nest and will not feed it.

In many instances, the mother cuckoo will be close by and watch the nest. She will retaliate if she sees her baby missing or being mistreated. Even mons that evict cuckoos end up with nothing after mom comes in and destroys everything.
@snappypanda8258 Жыл бұрын
Yes if the mother's chicks survive without being tossed out of the nest, the mother is less likely to feed the cuckoo. She can identify her chicks by their appearance and cry. Though the cuckoo tries hard to mimicry, in this instance, the cuckoo is doomed.

This is interesting and surely unusual, as baby cuckoos normally eject the chicks and eggs of the host, when they are very young. The baby cuckoo has clearly been fed up till this point but the parent now knows it is wrong. Can you please tell us what species of host bird it is and what species of cuckoo (if you know) and what part of the world? I assume Asia somewhere.

@philipveerman75262 жыл бұрын
@@Blessedgiving There are many different situations of many different species of cuckoos and hosts around the world. The strategies used are constantly evolving and so at this point in time, we see many of them in play. So yes this includes egg colour and size, mouth markings and colour, begging strategies. @suchomimustenerensis5302 Жыл бұрын
I _think_ it's a common cuckoo, and the host bird is some kind of thrush. What I find interesting about common cuckoos is that the adults have a pattern that mimics that of a Eurasian sparrowhawk. Probably to scare potential hosts from their nests so they can insert their own eggs.
@huldu Жыл бұрын
We didn't get to see everything. That cuckoo looked very healthy. I'm thinking the clips where the birds fed the cuckoo were edited out or it would not look that good. Also the mother can't tell the chicks apart because they smell the same. Birds go by smell and not visuals when it comes to their offspring. That's why you can sometimes see a cuckoo in a nest that is way bigger than the "mother" feeding it. They just don't know.
@Sliferslacker21 Жыл бұрын
All these comments talking about how they enjoy seeing a baby bird starving. Lets you know who the psychos are, to enjoy an animal suffering. Might be a parasetic bird, but thats literally how they were designed and evolved. It's one of God's creatures as much as the others. And for those that don't believe in God, then the birds evolved like this for a reason and they've survived this long as well as the other species. I could understand if it was invasive, still sad, but to take joy in the suffering of ANY animal is incredibly psychotic.
@nugget4yearsago518 Жыл бұрын
They often draw a comparison with less "cuddly" parasitic animals. Yeah I wouldn't like having fleas and ticks all over me, or a tapeworm in my intestines, I still wouldn't think that they are doing this out of malice or relishing over pain with sick human-like glee instead of simply acting their nature as they were meant to survive. Placing human morals on animals that couldn't care less is stupid.
@Sliferslacker21 Жыл бұрын
@@nugget4yearsago518 Exactly. And whether people like it or not, they still play a key role in the environments they live in by helping to regulate wildlife. Everything has a purpose for its existence in nature. Nature is both beautiful and absolutely cruel, and parasitic creatures are still apart of nature. There have even been studies down on this that show parasitic birds can even be beneficial for the entire brood. These people cheering for the death of a baby cuckoo should not even call themselves animal/nature lovers as it is more then clear they only love a certain part of the animal kingdom and nature.
@l.n.33723 ай бұрын
But knowing that a bird evolved to be a brood parasite efficiently doesn't mean humans have to like it, after all. They have developed an efficient ecological niche, but humans don't have to respect them for it. Most humans watching these videos feel badly for the host birds. Normally, their eggs would be killed by baby cuckoo. It's understandable that the people watching the videos are relieved that mama bird is taking care of her own babies and not the brood parasite. It's true that humans shouldn't apply human logic to animals, but humans cheer for heroes in movies over the villains, too. It's not that unusual that they would see the cuckoo bird as villainous for killing off competition. Is it wrong to apply human mentality to birds? Sure, but it's understandable why people watching feel this way. It doesn't make them psychotic
