Amazing day of flipping rocks and tins looking for snakes! In a local prairie known for fox snakes, smooth green snakes and a couple species of garters, we ventured out on a beautiful late spring day to see what we could find and we were not disappointed.

Wow, you all crushed it that day. Makes me miss the Chicagoland area. I need to get out and do some prairie herping when I’m back up that way visiting family.

I think people underestimate the herping in the Chicago area. There are a lot of species that live around here. Where did you move to?

Just two grown children running around playing with snakes while their cloacas explode on them. Glad you enjoyed it!

5:19 C'mon. 12 at least!?! Flip of the century right there. 9:29 dig that one. Ridiculous!! 80 snakes in 2 hours have to be a record somewhere. We have a few records in CO of quantity flips in under an hour. Speed herping.

I just moved to west suburbs of Chicago. I’m really hoping to find my first smooth green and fox snake this summer, a milk snake eventually!

Herping isn't just for young kids. You should get back into the hobby. People don't realize how close they live to areas where they can find snakes and other wildlife. Thanks for commenting DevilDog!

@@IyaMiri_ne_Sero-Kizuru Same! My family owned a cottage in Michigan when I was a kid. There were so many frogs, toads, turtles and snakes. It's really when I began my appreciation and love for these critters! Thanks for commenting!

@@DEVILDOG1964 You're very fortunate, there's only a few fragmented areas around us where you can find these species anymore. As more and more land is developed, the snakes are disappearing and left with only a handful of tiny preserves to try and survive.
Garter Snakes everywhere! Must save them before the neighbors kill them all.
