The first system was tested near San Francisco, CA. I remember reading a local paper in which some "Supposed Expert Professor" was dismissing the effort. However, the person had no solution for cleaning the oceans. They just kept insisting on dealing with land-based trash. I think we can all agree that this problem requires an all-hands-on deck approach. Keep up the good work!

It's not an easy solvable problem and just DOING something for the sake of doing it can cause far more harm, that's the problem. To truly get rid of plastics you have to get people to stop using it and good luck with that, but no matter what the changes have to take place from the top, ie government, companies that produce and use it. What's your idea in how to replace plastics and still make it as affordable? Like I said what's the point dealing with trash when you can go straight for the source of it. For every piece of trash you remove you can bet there's a lot more out there coming in. The human population across the world is booming so yes, it's a problem that will get worse and worse with time. Come up with a replacement for disposable plastics and get companies to use that instead.

I travelled from Spain to Morocco many years ago by ferry. When approaching the shore, there was a massive amount of plastic trash floating on the water. Sadly, this is the most enduring memory I have of that trip.

I remember back when i was in college reading about him as a 17 year old with the idea and wondered if we would see any results. To have an idea, then to go out and execute are two very different things, and one is even harder then the other. The work, the stress and perseverence to do it till you achieve your goal. I bet people used to say to him that he should be realistic and would never be able to pull it off. As a teenager, a plan of such proportions, he must have had quite a few people chuckling when he told them what he was going to do. That's going to be the only way to really make an impact on this type of pollution problem. I don't know if you have been watching the videos on China's terrible floods, but you can see the huge scale of new rubbish going downriver into the oceans. All Xi Xinping says about it is - it cleans the streets. He makes no effort to capture the rubbish and cares nothing about the impact this pollution must be having on his own country's and the rest of the world's fishing stocks.

Trash is a problem, but much of the plastic in the ocean comes from fishing nets. Instead of whining, do something. Banning non-biodegradable plastic fishing nets is easier than banning plastic bags and bottles

Wonderful video! The governments have to get on board by banning unnecessary plastic containers and packaging and forcing BY LAW companies to stop making things, or putting things, or wrapping things in plastic. Too bad for the oil companies, too bad for corporations who specialize in making every thing from plastic, too bad for corporations who insist on planned obsolescence and/or short lifespan products. And people need to be taught ruthlessly to be responsible for where they thrown things out which they have used. But the first part of the equation has to be the corporations who produce goods. It is easier to control the actions of one hundred corporations than it is to control the actions of 100,000 people.

This issue belongs to each and every one of us. We all use plastics. We may not dump them into the oceans with our own hands, but we use them. A world wide tax should be set in place to help fund this operation. Would it not make sense, for us, our planet and our children's, children's future? The earths health should be our main, and most important mission over the coming decades. "We need and love what the earth provides. It cares for us, but we do little to care for it" Switched on.

A tax for what to clean up plastics? There are sadly far more concerning things out there hence it has such a low priority, like global warming. It's a *luxury* to even be able to care and think about plastic trash, you realize this I hope? The majority of the world's population isn't even living in the west, we're talking about poor people living in miserable poverty with little to no education. How about we fix those problems first because it'll be a LOT easier dealing with everything else once people are united and on the same page. Not just the rich white people in the west and "everyone" else should follow suite. That's not how things work, in the real world.

Unfortunately, this is all just chasing your tail until there is a world-wide agreement to stop using plastic and develop better recycling systems which ALL coastal (and then inland) regions will have access to. Traveling around the world you begin to notice that it is not that common to have garbage collection, let alone recycling. And recycling isn't effective or efficient. They need to think about stopping the source, as well.

They do think about the source and they actively lobby national and regional governments about the issue. But one of their aims about doing these cleanups - other than the obvious, at least getting rid of a large percentage of it - is to make the issue *visible* and to give people *hope* that it can be fixed. A lot of this pollution happens because corporations in rich countries would rather get people buying water in plastic bottles than pay taxes where they do business in poor countries so that the govts there can provide clean water. Places are too poor to provide proper waste disposal services, so people chuck it in the nearest waterway or in a landfill that gets washed into a river when it rains. All these things need to be tackled, but if people see the river can be cleaned, maybe they will chuck in less rubbish, demand clean tap water, elect govts that can make changes, etc etc.
