And as I sit here with literally a “bird’s eye view” from my large bedroom window marveling at the male Anna’s, rufous and Allen’s fighting and chasing each other for feeder rights, daily and also looking at the females sneaking in at intervals to feed… watching this superb documentary just put the icing on the cake in understanding their biological anatomy and behavior

WOW! So you've actually heard that scratchy mating song of the Anna's hummingbird. I noticed that the Ruby throated hummingbird is a popular hummingbird in Ohio and that it flies over 500 miles non-stop over the Gulf of Mexico. That's crazy. There's actually a short video clip of the Ruby in this latest hummingbird video. Must have been thinking of you LOL.

Great content, the Anna's have settled year round here in Tacoma. Some areas like the UK don't have these magnificent birds and that's a great shame. Nothing cuter than seeing them flap around in their shallow bird bath, hope more people can get one going as they need these to keep clean and thrive.

Thanks much for this video. Hummingbirds bring me so much joy. When I moved I started seeing Hummingbirds in my backyard. So I bought a feeder and put their food and now sugar water (1/4 cup sugar + 1 cup fresh water changed every 4d or so) and Hummingbirds come and feed on it now. It's right next to the red flowers that bloom and they love it. Not sure what it is about Hummingbirds but their speed, flight movements and backward flights etc. make them spectacular to be around. Zippy little creatures. What a product of evolution.

Great facts, starting with the history of "gorget" right through to being named after the Duchess. Anna's husband, the ornithologist from France, must have sailed over to the new world to have collected his specimen of hummingbird, that's somewhat cool too.

Wow. This was really interesting. We have hummingbirds here in Texas but didn't know all that you shared. Didnt know they use spider webs. Scary because some get trapped in spider webs.

Yes the spider webs can be a two way thing. Male hummingbirds can also get trapped if they skewer a large insect on one of their mating dives.Their beaks are too weak to open when there's a bee for example on them. It's rare but does happen. Such a fascinating bird. Nice you can enjoy them in Texas.

Anna's hummingbird is possibly the only hummingbird to be named after a princess (video has the full story)... and even got to sit in the box seat for the male hummingbirds death defying high dive. 😱

An Anna’s hummingbird made its nest right outside my window and I’ve been documenting and enjoying nature unfold in my eyes. Seeing the nest grow little by little every day. To seeing eggs inside. Seeing the little puff balls grow. It’s so beautiful to witness. The babies haven’t left the nest yet. I’m expecting them to be ready to fly soon considering when it’s windy I’ve seen them practice. Nooo I have not seen a male humming bird dive. But I have seen the female fighting off another hummingbird when it got to close to the nest. It was really intense. The way the colour comes from the iridescent nature of the feathers and not pigment, is incredible. And they have more feathers on their bodies for their body size than any other bird. All part of God's amazing design.

omg... the dive is something to see... i have seen it in my garden... it is startling and the sound he makes is also stunning. i was completely awed and shocked by his amazing prowess. i have many of them here in n. idaho in my orchard. i have piles of wood chips that provide plenty of bugs. i have planted many flowers they like and have multiple feeders hanging around. this was an excellent video with great information.

That's a great question. I did a little research on this and discovered that you just to mix in 1 part of normal white sugar with 4 parts of boiled water (eg. a cup of sugar with four cups of water). Things to avoid are brown sugar, honey, food coloring, artificial sugar.
