Finn Underwood So when I performed this on Tuba, I noticed that this part has octaves for the Tuba for most of it, but the last bit where it descends to a C only had the upper octave (presumably the orchestrator thought that it would get unplayably low, but since I had a 4-valve BBb Tuba, I could actually get down all the way to that low C, lowest C on a Piano btw)....so I played the lower octave all the way down to that C in the performance. It was awesome.

@NightCM7187 жыл бұрын
We played this song the year that our band took a small trip to Wisconsin. The room I was in had like 8 guys and we were all hanging out at night, playing the Wii that one kid brought. Since we're all band nerds, we had Arabesque playing in the background as we were playing. Alex and I vs. Dave and Mitch. Wii tennis series was tied and the next game won. The match was about half done, and the intense part at 4:29 started playing, amping us up. Just as I hit the ball into the corner of the opposing court, winning the game, and thus the whole series, the majestic trumpet sound at 4:58 filled the room, as well as my heart. Alex and I had fought hard against Dave and Mitch for the title of best wii tennis duo in the room, and we'd finally won. Euphoric glory filled Alex and I (both of us are trumpet players), and it was topped off with the splendid fanfare of the trumpet. We celebrated and when I listen to this song now, I get chills that bring me back to that night. You couldn't have written a more perfect moment.

Bari sax player here (clearly). We had no low brass to speak of throughout my high school band career, so I'd double on reading a baritone bc part and changing the play style to match as best I could. Well, when this piece was passed out, I've never heard a band suddenly learn to sight-read so quickly. It sounded wonderful, and every practice we would always nail the entire thing, each time. It was truly a set of spectacular moments (and a great bassline to embellish!)

i have an amazing memory connected to this song. a while back i was on a school trip to indonesia to study language, and we'd been given some downtime in the hotel to freshen up before going out with the group for the next activity. i was roommates with some band kids so we were discussing concert band repertoire, and somehow we chose this piece to listen to on my friend's phone speakers. now, about half an hour prior, we had ordered room service to our hotel room, but since we had ordered in indonesian, nobody knew exactly when the food would arrive. we thought we would have plenty of time, but sure enough, time passed and passed and room service was yet to arrive. it got to the point where we had literally five minutes until we had to be in the lobby to leave to the next destination. so we're in the room, waiting anxiously and kinda freaking out about having to cancel our order, and we hear a knock on the door just as the song hits climax. thing is though, by that time we had mere minutes before we had to be out, so i have vivid memories of speed-eating pizza with my mates while the tutti sections play in the background, followed by the arrival of the victorious conclusion as we realize that our disaster had been averted. the pizza was really good too. some epic memories tied to an even more epic piece!

+Jessica Buckley I played the great locomotive chase as an eighth grader, and then played this last year as a junior- they're both very fun pieces! (:

I'm a French Horn player and this was by far the funniest piece i've played, and I'm going into my junior year of high school. Every rip Hazo writes is perfect.

All-County band wind ensemble Greenville, SC. 3rd chair tuba as freshman with everybody above me as a senior. This song will tear your lips to shreds, but is SOO fun to play. Quite frankly one of my favorite peices ever.

I still remember when we got this piece in wind band: the looks of the woodwinds when the tutti starts at 1:28. half of them didn't believe an euph could play that fast

The flute solo at the beginning....I know what I'm practicing over Spring Break. It's such a good piece I'm glad we're putting it on our list for state concert festival.

i got to meet Samuel Hazo! He was conducting the All state band for the seniors, but came in to tell the junior all state band good playing tips. He is surprisingly funny, and energetic, compared to more serious composers I've seen. Having him critique our songs was just amazing.

We played this for my school's spring concert last year and while it's a lovely piece of music I pretty much wanted to cry every time we played it I don't think there was ever a time where I could play this correctly lol

Unbelievable piece. Played it on tuba last year with my symphonic band. Not only is it a masterpiece but there was never a dull moment when playing this piece. One of my all time favorites.

This is absolutely incredible. I was close to tears at the end of the piece, it brought out so much emotion! Samuel R. Hazo has never faltered to leave me speechless at the ends of all his pieces! Thanks for uploading this masterpiece!

Still one of my proudest high school memories was playing bass bone on this freshman year. If you think that trombone lick is saucy now, I can assure you it certainly is when it's an octave down too

Sometimes I question Hazo's ability to write music that doesn't sound like his other pieces----and then he comes out with this and makes me put my foot in my mouth. Such a great composer.

I was in the same chair in high school when we played this song, and it really isn't as difficult as you'd expect. It was loads of fun to learn, and to finally be able to play it all the way through at a competition. I'm sure you'll have a great time playing this!

The Tuba part on this is a blast to play, it's very rare to find compositions where for the most part the Tuba has something other than long tone harmonization or time-keeping rhythms. This is such a piece
