A synchrotron is a high powered X-ray generator, running 24 hours day and night to provide high frequency light beams for scientific research. In order not to waste any time or money, the researchers make full use of every second they are allotted.
To discover more about this round-the-clock science, Nature Video spent a full 24 hours filming in the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility in Grenoble, France.

I would say that was an excellent selection of European accents. Keep up the good work boys and girls!!!

Worked like this in Elletra synchrotron for one week. Totally enjoyed the time there. You forget about sleep when you have planned for months to acquire that data 😅

You can get a good view of the facility from the Bastille Fort. It's just a quick cable-car from downtown Grenoble!

the synchrotron from Gernobel is mainly used by researchers to investigate proteins structures, they come with crystallised proteins and use a very polarised beam of X-ray to look at how the crystal scatter it and so they can induce from that a structure model.

How can you work properly in such complicated things without a good night sleep!

+Gabriela Steinitz Fair point, but a lot of what they're doing is simply collecting data for later analysis. Most of what they're doing is probably fairly repetitive/mindless and has been planned out far in advance. Also, if you've been waiting months for some "beam time" it's probably not too hard to stay motivated while there.

If I may object: You should be checking (by analysing) your data while acquiring.. You're probably not getting a second chance if the report states something like "Oh, I didn't work out - we forgot to take out the attenuator" or alike ;) However, I completely agree with the "motivation" part: Waiting for (very) long times, and finally having your proposal accepted keeps you definitely going further!! :D Side note: I believe not all of them have only a 24h slot. I rather think that the woman asking to cut out that part of the interview has been there for longer ;) (maximum time allocated is usually 6days=144h)

+Jef Damen If you're working in a huge facility with lots of sensitive equipment, yes, sometimes the appropriate repair person isn't instantly available 24/7.

+Jef Damen Even if you work at night at a synchrotron, you might not be authorized to replace cables. These facilities are picky about safety, usually for good reasons.

It would have been easier for the lay person ,for them to have explained in simple terms just what they were trying to accomplish. As for the loose wire, my god!! hope they dont try to smash the atom on the night shift.

Surprising they could stay up 24 hours together, 24 minutes around any of them and id fall asleep. Also wtf does this or any of your other videos have to do with nature

+Ed koch Splotch crotch Yeah what does understanding the physical universe have to do with nature! It's just stupid physics, which we all know has nothing to do with the natural world.
