If this is the small form content we're getting in between the bigger stuff I'm all for it! Shining a spotlight on shows that otherwise would never really get any discussion about them. Great stuff!

This has a ton of potential because there's so much to cover in the junk drawer of television history. Forgotten holiday specials. Cartoons made solely for syndication purposes. Sitcoms that weren't popular yet still made it to three seasons. Vh1 countdowns that had nothing to do with music. CableACE Award nominees. The list goes on.

I do remember enjoying The Chimp Channel when it was on, and the voice actors who were big in the 90’s and 2000’s are still big today. Anyway, this was a great start to a new series and looking forward to more.

I was a little disappointed that Nick Knacks was getting into the more mainstream era, since my favorite part was getting deep-drives into old also-ran TV series during the formative years, so I'm very into it if we get these little vertical slices that capture the same sort of energy. The music in Love Street absolutely killed me - can't imagine something less sexy than over-the-top Mickey Mousing tuba sounds.

Thanks for this. I have a soft spot for those rough mid 90s to the year 2000, of my teen years. Fox was hitting its stride by now, and UPN and WB were trying everything as they started out. So much unpolished stuff to go over from those basic channels to cable during this time. That whole raunchy but pre-911 innocence in television era.

Oh man, I'm sorry about your predicament! If rent wasn't so high, I'd say come back to California. It's (presumably) a lot cooler than Idaho. This is a good idea for a series. Most of what I watched was a lot of Cartoon Network in the '90s, a lot of MTV/MTV2/VH-1/Much Music USA/Fuse in the early 2000s and a lot of Comedy Central for the rest of the decade, so it will be interesting to see if any of those shows turn up here. That Chimp Channel show looks like something Homer Simpson would watch. Also, erotic cable was such an interesting phenomenon. I remember flipping through channels when I was 13, and I had DirecTV in a time zone where cable channels aired three hours earlier than usual, so I caught a bit of Eveready Harton in Buried Treasure -- a pornographic silent cartoon from the 1920s -- on Showtime or Cinemax and was scarred for life.

Sorry you're going through such a bad time, I totally understand. Here's hoping you find a new place to live in a better state. That said, I quite enjoyed this look into the past! I remember the days of "scare 'em straight" and as much as we still have it (people STILL believe "consuming problematic media" will make someone a bad person), at least NOW we understand that education is the superior way of teaching kids and teens to be safe. And I remember the good old days of the porn channels, teens in fiction and in the real world trying to unscramble the signals so they could see the forbidden juicy bits. For me, 1999 was mostly discovering anime via Pokemon, but also watching loads of South Park and still checking out MTV to see if they would play Beavis and Butthead. Or to laugh at Loveline. I hope this series continues!

Those were at least mildly amusing. That sort of Cracked Magazine level of movie parody type humor mixed with "monkee FAWNEE" works in short bursts. There's no way they could sustain that for a full 20 minute series no matter how many times Billy's (or if you prefer, Zim's) voice comes out of one.

I feel like "I have to upload anything to keep this channel alive" is such an outdated 2011-era KZbin mindset, when people thought that they just have to dilute their video feed with let's plays, podcasts and Mike Matei skits. Nowadays, we live in a post-JonTron, even a post-Quinton KZbin, where it's much more advisable to have well-perfroming videos uploaded next to each other, even if months apart
@joeouellette79507 ай бұрын
Sometimes? I mean, depending on the content. Defunctland can upload a feature length BANGER once a year or 6 months, and that works for him. It would probably work for Greg here, too, but it also doesn't hurt to remind the algorithm you exist every now and then.

Oh, "The Chimp Channel". I only heard of it thanks to a funny moment (at least it is to me, your mileage may vary) during the qualifying session for the 1999 Coca-Cola 600, a race TBS had broadcast rights to at the time. Legendary commentator Ken Squier, former driver Buddy Baker, and Dick Berggren were calling it. As they returned from a break, Ken read a promo for "The Chimp Channel". I'm not going to transcribe it. You gotta go find it, and see it for yourselves.

I will say this right now, Greg. First, I'm sorry you're evicted. Second, it doesn't matter if you want to put your main Nick Knacks series on hold. Nickelodeon in the 90s was half as much as enjoyable as it was in the 80s. At least some shows were worth watching on that channel in the 90s, including all the game shows that premiered that decade along with Weinerville, Kablam!, and Oh Yeah! Cartoons. Third, I watched The Chimp Channel and I can tell you, it didn't have good entertainment value. Lancelot Link was better. Anyway, good luck finding a new home and I hope you're doing well, despite what happened to your former home. Take care.

@theneonchimpchannel90957 ай бұрын
I think, for what it was, The Chimp Channel was well written. It was a difficult watch sometimes because it was Chimps doing things that aren't natural for them to do, but I sort of saw it as a racier Muppet show with Chimps instead of puppets. It would have been better had they just made Chimp puppets as then there's not going to be any incidents with them being mistreated onstage or after the show has ended. Chubbs, the Chimp who played Harry Waller (voiced by Maurice LaMarche) was later found living in a disgusting road side zoo and in poor health. PETA eventually rescued him but I've never been able to find out what happened after that, I suspect he didn't live long after that. I also suspect that the other Chimps probably met a similar fate. It's easy to look at the humour as "cringe" now but it was very much of it's time and not that far off what SNL were doing around that same era. As for the show's short life span, they said at the time they'd only really planned to do 1 season as it was far too expensive to keep it going. Because of the size of the Chimps, they needed to build special sets so they'd be to scale and that might work for a show like Lancelot Link where they reuse the same sets a lot, but on a sketch show, they needed several news sets per week. Plus they also needed to pay a lot more people than they would with a normal live action show as each Chimp needed a voice artist, a trainer and a carer not to mention costume people that would have required specialist training. The Chimp Channel had an interesting thing in common with fellow somewhat childish but very much adult show Greg The Bunny when aired in Australia. In both cases, the networks bought the rights thinking it was a kids show and aired it in a kid friendly time slot only for children to be subjected to sex jokes that they weren't ready for. Both would be pulled from broadcast after a week and then be aired ridiculously late at night.

Hate to break this to you, but...ehhh... you'd actually have THREE nickles. For a VERY brief period of time, Saban productions/Fox Kids ran a very much filler series about monkeys that ran a TV network and most of the series was made up of bad gag dubs of old anime Saban had the rights to. Though looking it up, it may have just been a pitch pilot they ran as a special event, but I swear there were a few episodes. But seriously. What the hell is up with Gen-Xers and monkeys/chimps?

I love that stupid Love Street intro. I could do without the exaggerated moaning though. Believe it or not, Showtime's still got the softcore...well, what it actually is now is just films in which people actually are doing the deed, shot with alternate angles, given alternate titles. One on tonight is called "From Friendship to Lust", which in its triple-X form is called "Best Friends Better Lovers". I'm sure Paramount is trying to find a way to dump them as soon as they can, as they probably don't draw the kind of attention they want on Paramount+.
