I have a question: with classical pronountiation do you read Greek words without changing the accent? I'm from Italy, so I study Latin with another pronountiation and we read "Naumàchia", not "Naumachìa".

Im an spanish speaker and he's accent sounded off, you are right a romance language and by extention Latin, I guess, would say Naumáchia.

There was much debate about the pronunciation of this word with several colleagues. The Greek accent, though tonal in nature and not necessarily the same as the Latin stress based, would have put an emphasis on that iota that may have sounded, as it did to me and others, similar to a stress accent such that in our attempts as non-native speakers to reproduce the sound, we would have added a stress accent to the iota. However, since the iota is not a long vowel, more conservative Latin speakers may have preferred to shift the stress accent from the penultimate to the antepenultimate. I wanted to recreate the sound of a Roman attempting to preserve a Greek accent. Good news is that there is no way to say one is for sure right or wrong and it is still comprehensible. Take for instance the English word combatant. In America it is pronounced combátant but in England it is pronounced cómbatant. Both ways are comprehensible even if, admittedly, you might need to ask someone to repeat themselves if they use the version you are not used to hearing.
