For the benefit of any other readers, here is a 'cut & paste' from Google: It's pretty simple, really. A league is an old-fashioned measurement of distance that's roughly equivalent to three miles. 3 x 20,000 = 60,000 miles. This is the distance Aronnax, Nemo, and company travel under the sea, not the depth they go while traveling. And also from Wiki. English-speaking world[edit] On land, the league is most commonly defined as three miles, though the length of a mile could vary from place to place and depending on the era. At sea, a league is three nautical miles (3.452 miles; 5.556 kilometers). So, I've learned something today too. Regards Mark in the UK

I was confused 60,000 miles down would be deep but Verne was referencing the distance traveled not the depth or it would be fathoms. See my comment for the Wikipedia link. You would think that someone who loves Jules Verne as much as me would just know these things...

A league is approximately three nautical miles, varies by country and time period. "20,000 Leagues" is not the depth, but the distance the Nautilus traveled underwater. The circumference of the Earth is about eight thousand leagues, so the Nautilus' voyage was equivalent to circumnavigating the Earth three times. In 1960, the USS Triton became the first submarine to go around the world underwater - ninety years after Verne's novel.

Everyone keeps referring to the Nautilus diving to a depth of 20,000 leagues but that’s not what the author was saying. It’s 20,000 leagues around the world underwater.

Wonderful! Now how about trying to make an RC controlled Giant Squid to attack it now and then? Probably it will be incredibly hard. ;) Btw, it doesn't mean 20000 leagues below the sea; that would be almost 11,000 KM, about the dameter of the Earth! It means a journey of 20000 leagues travelling below the sea.
