I'm much more used to sailing a single masted fore n' aft bermudan sloop yacht or dinghy, it takes quite a bit of unlearning knowing how to sail a 3 masted square rigged ship. Thanks for this I can now see what I was doing wrong - trying to go about as if I was sailing a dinghy without the forces of the wind acting on the sails lol.

Well done. Bearing in mind that "nautical terminology" can be a bit fluid: 1. "Coming about" is normally associated with tacking, turning into the wind, but I believe it is sometimes used anytime a ship makes a radical turn which puts the wind on the other side. 2. Turning away from the wind is more commonly called "wearing" or "gybing" (Americans spell it "gibing", pronounced "jeye-bing", long "i"). I don't know whether this is modeled in the game, but on a fore-and-aft rigged ship (like the beginner's cutter), you have to control the mainsail boom carefully because otherwise, as you cross the wind it will swing wildly to the other side damaging the ship and decapitating careless crew. Niggling about terminology aside, you give a very clear and concise explanation.

Thank you Grunf! I had such difficulty tacking my Ship up wind, and it being an Indianman, is indubitably hard to tack against wind with as is. So Thank You, you spared me losses!

I use a bit simpler manner to this with only forwards or backwards momentum in mind. Meaning if you are going forwards (speed wise) you have the sail point as an arrow > towards they way you want to turn with the rudder turning that way as well. If you have negative speed you reverse the same method meaning you point your sail and rudder against the way you want to turn. Once you have the wind at your back or to the side and you want to go strait you just level out both sails (auto skipper) and the rudder into neutral. If you are positioned against the wind and at 0 speed. You will only get "negative" momentum with your sails and therefor have the sails arrow against your turn direction. This is make your ship take a U turn backwards while turning.

@bladereturns4 жыл бұрын
