"Newport, R.I. as a Center for the Slave Trade in America"
Feb. 15, 2012
Director of the Rhode Island Economic Development Corp. and noted historian Keith Stokes gave a lecture to a full house in the Spruance Auditorium at the U.S. Naval War College on Feb. 15. In this lecture, Stokes talks about the Rhode Island Slave Trade during the 17th and 18th centuries. The lecture was organized by the Naval Station Newport's Diversity Committee. During the 17th and 18th centuries, one of three Newport residents were slaves that were brought over from Ghana. Stokes explained that while slaves in Rhode Island were treated vastly different than those who worked on southern plantations, they were still slaves.

At this point, due to so much misleading, biased and factually incorrect information, take colonial history with a bag of salt - they'll never be honest with the true horrors they dealt and the true impact that the captured made in improving the stolen land.

This lecture was very misleading!!!!!!! Ghana only became a British colony after the abolishment of the slave trade in 1808 (in fact even after the Berlin conference of 1884 did the English successfully plant a colony in Africa) The modern incorrect interpretation of African slaves arriving in the British colonies in 1619 came from a Dutch pirate ship that raided the Spanish in the Caribbean!!!! You cannot assume they all were from Ghana. This man is lying to those children. This lecture is of no value to a well versed student of world history and it’s misleading to people who listen to what he says and takes it at face value. Not an insult to him personally, it’s just that this is a bunch of BS!

how can you be so sure that Deuteronomy 28:68 is referring to africans? every nation has been enslaved at some point. europeans were also taken in boats to africa and the middle east to be slaves. in fact, their treatment was WAY worse and lasted for considerably longer. those countries are STILL practicing slavery to this day,and have never stopped. it was europeans that stepped up to end it, after having about the least participation within the realm of slave ownership. that says something, and its convenient that people love to forget these facts.

I don’t see any memorial or museum about slavery in Newport. There should be one.

True the lack of history does create a vacuum however, racism does hold one back. Not everyone has your history
