During the Battle of Tsushima, Ensign Yamamoto served aboard the Armored Cruiser Nisshin, which was part of the Mikasa’s screen. Yamamoto saw the close up tactics of Admiral Togo and above all; the need for surprise in battle. It’s hard to think that both Togo and Isoroku were the most notable admirals of the Combined Fleet.

Mikasa park is right next to Fleet Activities (FLEACT), Yokosuka, where I served (active duty) for three years & as a civilian for six years. Mikasa park, which is the area you see in the video (off her port side), has small concerts, often during the summer months. Forward of the ship, you can see a portion of FLEACT, Yokosuka. I miss Japan (lived there for 12 years). Lol! I used to work with Kazou (the guy around the 5:40 mark). I worked public affairs on Kitty Hawk & FLEACT Yokosuka Public Affairs. He would coordinate with us for tours of certain things & we would accompany him on tours. He used to translate for us, sometimes, when we had Japanese tour groups. He is a cool, laid-back dude.

Well, she's already encased in concrete since Washington Naval Treaty, way before WW2 starts. So she never served WW1. Encased because that was the only way she can escaped being sunk or scrapped due to said Naval Treaty.
@gdd293 жыл бұрын
Two points to add. 1. It was Chester Nimitz who did the main part of the job to restore Mikasa after WW2. He admired Admiral Togo so much that he didn't want to see Mikasa being used as a dance hall. 2. Admiral Togo in his old age became a stumbling stone in IJN. While most of the officers at the Navy Department including Isoroku Yamamoto were strongly for maintaining somehow good relationship with UK and US, some officers, extreme nationalists, used Togo and his honor to justify their idea. Togo in those days was already detached from up-to-date reality of the world and became influence to belittle the importance of the relationship among IJN. This eventually led Japan to Pearl Harbour attack.

Interesting fact, future Admiral Isuroku Yamamoto served during the battle of Tsushima, where he was wounded and lost two fingers as a result, fortune would spare him the loss of a 3rd finger which would have barred him from reenlistment in the navy. This fact would come to haunt the allies 20 years later. As for the British, Japanese alliance, after the Washington Naval Treaty Japan was forced to not renew its alliance with Britain as one of the key conditions on the treaty that was pushed by the American delegation, the Americans had viewed Japan as a naval rival after the Japanese victory at Tsushima, and they were very keen to see an end to this strategic alliance as a means of further isolating Japan and thus keeping them out of the American sphere of influence in the Pacific.

I am Japanese and I would like to thank Chester William Nimitz and Charles Andrew Willoughby who played a major role in preserving this ship.

For some reason this video always reminds me of the battlecruiser hmas Australia, the only capital ship to serve in the Australian Navy, there was a massive push to preserve here after WW1, but unlike the mikasa , it failed and she was scuttled off Sydney heads in 1924, to comply with the terms of the Washington Treaty. In my opinion this was a big mistake as many Aussies including myself would have paid good money to explore the pride of the Australian navy during WW1.

Mikasa preserved in concert is a bad idea. The concert prevents structure support and over time Mikasa would pancake and collapse because she isn't in water or a cofferdam.

The British should be grateful that at least one of "their" Battleship still exist today

The British already knew how to build Mikasa, shes a modified version of the pre-Dreadnaught Majestic class. SHe was expensive because she was being sold, its a mark up.

There's still a street in Barrow, where this ship was built, named after her.

In the 1960s (Yes I'm that old !) I went to Walney County Secondary School in Barrow-in-furness, The school was on the corner of Ocean Road and Mikasa Street. The school was demolished in the 1990s ,but Mikasa Street is still there . Vickers Armstrong also built the Japanese battlecruiser Kongo just before the First World War she outclassed Royal Navy Capital ships of the time. So much that the British built the Lion, Tiger and Princess Royal
