So why wasn't the I-19 attack talked about? In that attack the USS Wasp and USS O'Brien were sunk while North Carolina lost 5 sailors and was significantly damaged in the attack. The rescue actions of the North Carolina and other ships in the task force to save their comrades on the two sinking ships was extraordinary and I think is worthy of mention for the ship.

Carolina Dog To be fair, that doesn’t have much to do with the North Carolina, like the Japanese misunderstanding and thought they had sunk her is their fault, nothing to do with this ship and loosing a sailor is nothing worthy to mention. On the other hand, this ship getting severe damage is significant to its service career

@@atticusstewart5096 Are you stupid or just too ignorant to understand the purpose of this video ? This is just a brief overview of the North Carolina, 18 min video is just a summary, not a full account of detail. It’s impossible to go through every single detail of the service history. They have to omit less relevant information to keep the video short. And loosing 5 sailor is really nothing in the context of war....over thousands of men loose their life every day during war. It’s impossible to recognize every single one of them in a video. I mean their family members will not forget them, but you still have to understand due to the large amount of casualties in each engagement, unless the sailor did something outstanding, it’s not likely for a documentary to mention all of them.

My wife, son and I visited the North Carolina not long ago. It appears they've taken good care of her and for a relatively 'modern' sailor like me she is absolutely fascinating. I've actually witnessed 3 of the 4 Iowas underway and firing their main batteries, 2 of them during Desert Storm. I also did some work aboard Iowa while she was being recommissioned in the 1980s. I'm a destroyer sailor at heart still, but the battlewagons impressed the hell out of me.

When the North Carolina was being upgraded, there was a man walking the deck with a big hoop, he would lay it down on the deck, draw a ring around it, move it so it almost touched the last ring and draw a new ring. Where each ring was, the shipyard mounted an AA gun. This is why it's so hard to say how many AA guns a BB carried in the later parts of the war!

@@carolinadog8634 I am an 18 year volunteer on board and one of the contributors to this video... After the torpedo hit she increased to 25kts and stayed in formation for the rest of the day. She would be return for Pearl and repairs and some additional work would take about 30 days or so. She would not return to the western US until her major refit in the summer/fall of 1944. Due to the impact and damage, the #1 turret could be used only in an emergency until repairs were made in Pearl, but none of the crew ever shared that there was any concern of firing #1 turret would cause the ship to sink or break apart, just that they didn't want to cause further damage that would lengthen the repair time.... also, the whipping effect on the foremast disabled her SK air search radar. One of the worst stories was from one of the damage control team members talking about sealing up bulkheads with possible alive crew members on the other side... said it gave him nightmares.

Want to mention that North Carolina was been purchased from US Navy by the *school kids* from her name-sake?? Imagine, school children who are saving their spare changes and school lunch budget ,just to save her from getting scrapped. Its kinda overwhelming to know their abundant love on " _as being her_ ", not as a simple battleship. And I'm a little sad that not as many iconic ship was not able to receive the same treatment as North Carolina, such as Warspite, Duke of York, Saratoga and Enterprise

Called me biased, as I'm from North Carolina, but I just really think this is the best looking battleship in the US fleet. Everything is in proportion, the clean lines are beautiful, she has an athletic, lean stance, but has a lot of muscle. That measure 32 camo paint just looks awesome (although as she's painted now is inaccurate to her WWII paint scheme, the sides were painted asymmetrically). And that she still exists and is in such amazing condition makes me proud. I've visited this ship probably 8 times now, it's always a thrill. Can't recommend it or Wilmington enough. I'm a bit surprised this history of The USS North Carolina did not include the ship being struck by a torpedo while doing escort duty with the USS Wasp and USS Saratoga on 15 September 1942. While she had a 13 by 82 foot hole in the port forward quarter, over 12 feet below the waterline, she managed to maintain station with the USS Saratoga, doing 25 kts with a 5 degree list to port.

I was just visiting Wilmington last week and toured the USS NC, this video cannot do justice how amazing the main gun turrets are. They're 3 stories tall and the whole thing turns. It is crazy the little hallways it takes to get in there and imagining how hot it would be. I was in there when it was ~85F outside and it was hot down below deck, I am in good shape but that was not a comfortable sweat. He says there's 177 men in one gun mount/ turret, and I read many stories of guys with heat exhaustion. Also the actual turret up top is so cramped, I am 6'2 and could hardly move in some areas

I am brand new to World of Warships, but this video was shot in Wilmington, NC. How do I know? I was born and raised here and have been on the ship numerous times. It is quite amazing. I have even sat on it to watch the 4th of July fireworks in downtown Wilmington. Now if that isn't American, sitting on a battleship on 4th of July watching fireworks, I don't know what is! Can't wait to grind my way to unlocking it in game. As much as it reps NC, it reps Wilmington too. Being that its docked here. Gotta rep my state/city. Woo.

I was born in North Carolina and this ship was one of the first model ships I built. When I was in 4th grade I put my dimes in a cup to help buy this ship. July 1st, 1963 I was on board. At that time, you could man the 40mm & 20mm guns and I had a tremendous time playing with the biggest toy I'd ever seen. For most of my life, I carried a USS North Carolina Battleship Memorial Pocket Knife - in my pocket and I still have that knife to this day. You'd be surprised at how many computers I repaired with that knife ... I can still remember laying on my back in a computer lab in Puerto Rico using the smaller of that knife's two blades as a screw driver, removing failed circuit boards from a rack I pulled out over me - and then replacing them ... I'd been sent to provide training - not fix computers - and hadn't brought my tools ... so I was using what was in my pocket ... .

BB-55 North Carolina is the most decorated Battleship during WWII. The story of her purchase by school children raising money (dimes and nickels) to buy the ship for the state of North Carolina was unfortunately left out of this documentary and one of the most telling examples of American pride. I have been on this ship over 20 times. It is truly a masterpiece of American manufacturing in the 20th century.

Depends on the ship The main armament of the Iowas I believe is still usable (well, all of them except Iowa's turret 2 which was never fully repaired, just aesthetic repairs) The North Carolina, and other WW2 era BBs besides the Iowas, have their main armament disabled (disabled as in immobilized), and I believe parts of their power plant are also removed Note I never mentioned the secondaries, those I'm unsure Odds are the 5 inch 38s on the Iowas are still mobile, while any other warship has their secondaries disabled, but it all depends on what the US government requires of each museum ship, so it's never exact (Note: I believe 2 Iowa's are still, under US Government request, able to be reactivated, however this could be incorrect. If this is true, Wisconsin and New Jersey are the 2 more likely ones. Iowas turret 2 is busted, so it'd be expensive to repair, and Missouri's role in history would make her a huge headache if she got sunk)

Not sure what you mean. If you mean its sad she never got to duel her enemy counterparts, (Just my guess since you mention North Carolina, and the Iowa's but not Alabama) I guess. Though her sister USS Washington did fire on (and sank) Japanese Battleship Kirishima. If your going down the path of "reactivation" than its not sad at all, as beautiful as these ships are they are completely obsolete and of no practical use in the modern Navy.
@TheUsmc0802
@TheUsmc0802 5 жыл бұрын
....even if first hand knowledge is gone ists not actually gone. AARs exist from the last deactivation. The ships are a tiny bit out dated. The boilers can still be used even if they are the last of their type. The ammo is still available and more can be made, "they" were developing base bleed projectiles that would've almost doubled their range, and think about how amazing a 16" version of the 155mm Excalibur round would be. One destroyer has one 5" the Iowa's still have 8! The armor is still the thickest and would provide the best crew protection compared to the destroyer from over the horizon enemy assets. The biggest issue I admit to is if the barrels are out of round how could they replace that? Even updating the electronics would be pennies compared to the stealth ships the Navy is trying to produce that there won't be enough built to matter. Russian admirals still respect our BBs, there's a reason why!

Met an NC Sailor in 2000. I was in the Navy myself, stationed at Kaneohe. I worked a second job at some of the hotels outside Pearl/ Hickam. Every year the old sea dogs would come out for ceremonies and celebrations. Naturally, working at the hotels outside the bases, I was surrounded by them. For a young Navy man that loves naval history this was great. I don’t remember this Sailor’s name, but I do remember he was from the Northeast, Philadelphia maybe. He looked very young, I thought, after he told me his age I was surprised. I commented on it and I remember he said it’s because “I do PT at Balley’s gym everyday and drink homemade wine, the family recipe.” I remember him saying his family was Italian. I may be misremembering, but I thought he said the NC was steaming towards or away from Pearl on December 7th.
