Naval Medical Center Portsmouth

A look at the U.S. Navy's oldest continuously operating hospital, Naval Medical Center Portsmouth. The sprawling hospital is located just across the Elizabeth River from the Hampton Roads Naval Museum in downtown Norfolk, Virginia, and its historic building #1 that is viewable from the fantail of the USS Wisconsin (BB-64).

I was TAD there in Building 1 in 1988. I was stationed at NAS Keflavik Iceland and was Med evaced to Portsmouth Naval Hospital for an abdominal issue. I use to escort visitors around Building One including the Operating Room in the dome. It was still pretty beat up inside the Building. The Operating room still had some antiquated medical equipment in it with chunks of plaster all over the floor. I still have a red cue ball I found in the building. The Med hold building had an old Military Cemetery behind it and was on the second floor of the Repair building. We ate in Building 3. I had a good time there. We took the ferry to Waterside in Norfolk quite often

The admin building pictured here was part of the hospital in 1983 and housed the Nursery ICU where my son was born on 22 April 1983. It was called Building One then.

My father was in the Air Force in 1958 when I was born there. My hospital birth certificate says "United States Naval Hospital, Portsmouth, New Hampshire." However, my Vital Records Birth Certificate says I was born in Kittery, Maine. This has been a pain in my butt my entire life when I have interactions with the Federal Government.

I was born in this hospital, but I've never seen it, well, that I can remember. We moved from there before I was 1. I'd love to go there sometime.
