Excellent simhendra madhyama -- Ramaa ramaa ... My memory went to the rama idols in the padmananhsswamy precincts. Also the many navaratri concerts I heard in the 1980s -- Semmangudi, Lalgudi, Palghatmani iyer concerts then in the navaratri mantapam. Such divine environment !!

This must have exactly been how vaggeyakaras envisioned their compositions to be sung. Vidwan S. Shankar belongs to a rare breed of musicians who can sensitively portray a concert in such a balanced fashion. Also, he's blessed with a very rich voice that defies age. I was there to witness the magic as it unfurled at the divine Navaratri Mantapam yesterday. I can only describe it as an incredibly moving experience. Vocal support by Shri Ramani deserves a special mention, especially for the upper octaves. Shri Vinu on the violin weaved some incredible sangathis that would've evoked a lot of "aahaas" in another concert setting (as applause of any kind is forbidden in the Navaratri Mantapam concerts). Shri Sudheer and Shri Mahesh demonstrated how they can make percussion instruments sing: their thani Avartanam literally became one with the niraval, and one could easily discern that "sAmaja pungava chArugatE" could not have been better expressed with laya.
