I love these kids and I love this sport. Had no clue how much I loved it (or that I would even like it) until “Cheer” on Netflix. These kids are true athletes!

Anyone else think Gabi's parents are waaaaay overpowering? She seemed really unhappy around them in the documentary. Give the girl some space! Seems like they are exploiting her to make money for themselves tbh

I do competition cheerleading (middle school levers cheerleading) and I can only imagine how difficult that is when the cheerleading I do is already kind of difficult for me (as a base)

After watching "Cheer" which is an amazing documentary, I think that the State of Texas will have to step in and regulate this sport to some degree. The number of injuries is extraordinary compared to other sports. And the near callous disregard by the coach is shocking. The closest professional organization that has this degree of risk is Cirque du Soleil and they protect their members to a much higher degree. To see Sherbs injured like that was unbelievable. NOBODY caught her. How can you practice a routine with such a high degree of risk and not even have extra spotters to step in and prevent or at least minimize injury? The fact that she only had a dislocated elbow is by the grace of God only.

The state of Texas isn’t going to do anything. Injuries are just a part of cheerleading just like any other sport. This is nothing new or surprising for this of us who’ve been around cheerleading our entire lives. Just par for the course so to speak.

It may not seem like it but there are actually a lot of rules and regulations in place for skills you can and can’t do

Tana H you’re 100% right. There are tons of rules already, like stunts you can and cannot do, ways you can and cannot exit them... I used to cheer in the time where you couldn’t have hair touch your shoulders at competition. If they try to regulate things beyond this, competitive cheer would take a huge hit to the sport... it would be like telling track runners they can’t run too fast. These people live, breathe and die for this sport... you can’t take away their ability to challenge themselves. And if you do, they’ll find ways to do it anyway, just outside the arena of competition . What happened to Sherbs was scary for people new to the sport, but I’ve broken my nose three times, seen girls hurt far worse.. it is gut wrenching, but we keep going back. Football players keep going, concussion after concussion. That’s just sports I guess. And honestly, I can’t remember a time in my life where I felt more engaged and alive then when I did competitive cheer. It was so adrenaline inducing and the structure of it really did impact my life in such a positive way (like Monica talks about.) it was also the healthiest I’ve ever been. Damn I hate how it’s not possible to do when you’re older.

stop trying to regulate everything, nanny state can't control our lives from A-Z. You take up a high risk competitive sport, you have to accept everything that comes along with it.

Lehmann Peters shut the fuck up. It’s a risk you knowingly take entering any sport.
