I wonder if you can automatically do it without learning if you're already a good drummer.

i got some quneos and love jamming with them, got some friends who are drummers and/or percussionists... my guess was that the percussionists would have an easier time, when i forced them all to sit down and try it the result was the exact opposite... however none of them were immediately good at it, they were all able to produce something closely resembling music. the percussionist had the hardest time with it because the finger/hand techniques he is used to using didnt help him at all. one drummer was ok and the other guy was pretty decent. i couldnt help but notice that the one guy who was doing the best was the most interested and enthusiastic about it, the other two didnt really seem that convinced and were reluctantly doing it because i kept insisting ^^ so short answer is no because finger drumming is very different to playing on a drumset, but having a general understanding of rhythm of course helps a ton, and most drummers will constantly tap their fingers and feet and hit all kinds of random items to make some noise anyway. nothing that you can do that requires skill can just be done without practicing a ton, but if you take an accomplished drummer they can get something presentable done in a matter of weeks or a few months whereas someone starting on pads will require years (depending on the complexicity of the music they wanna play)

Thanks, that is a cool post! I sort of expected drummers already have movement independence down (which seems extremely important), but yeah I can imagine the muscle memory is in different places and it might require learning lots of stuff anew. I bought an Akai MPD to help myself program some drums, still quite useless with it.

cool, lemme recommend a great series of short clips done by jeremy ellis. theres a playlist called "Jeremy Ellis Finger Drumming" he starts easy and then builds up the difficulty... it gets pretty demanding so don't beat yourself up if you can't do it all right away, should you decide to give it a shot. i have no idea what genre your shooting for and i'm just barely not a beginnner myself anymore, but i'd be glad to help out with some tips as well if you wanna share some contact details (skype, discord or email are my current options)
