I'm a licensed plumber in Canada, and I just have to say I have so much respect for this person. An honest plumber is hard to find nowadays, and to find one willing to help instead of gouging the customer. That's a game changer. Keep on doing what you're doing, you're doing the world a much needed service and keeping the scummy plumbers away at the same time. :)

Given that this video is 5 years old...speaks volumes.... I couldn't just give a thumbs up and walk away. I gave a thumbs up to another video Ray did on servicing the Navien....but it wouldn't allow for comments, so I thought I'd just comment on this video since its essentially about the same topic. Ray - your videos are absolutely game changers. You explain things so well, I feel like I'm working for Water Heaters doing OTJT! Everything you covered was so thorough, it saved me quit a bit in service fees. If you guys were local in town to the Houston area, you'd be my plumbing company of choice, hands down. Thank You for a great PhD in tankless water heater maintenance!

This was an exact replacement for the old one that lasted about 10 years. kzbin.infoUgkx7yWIKcrbA9KMHkGSfcgxW2lsjHT6B8Sh The top of my mitigation tube by my roofline was just a 90 elbow which allowed too much debris to fall down into the fan, eventually ruining it. Without this issue, I bet it would have kept running another 10 years. When I replaced this fan, I added an extra elbow joint so the top tube now it does a 180, which should solve that problem. The radon guys around here wanted to charge me a $300 diagnostic fee, then parts/labor (probably close to $600 total). I installed this all by myself in about an hour for the cost of the fan; it would probably be even easier/faster with two people. FYI the manufacturer's warranty greatly differs depending on whether you install it yourself (1 yr warranty) or have a licensed installer do it (10 yrs).

You are the BEST!!! I wish I had had your company install my heat and hot water system. The company I used has ripped me off royally. Thanks to your video, I just got my heat and hot water running by myself in the middle of winter on a holiday weekend. The company said they couldn't come until tomorrow with temperatures going down to the teens overnight. I just saved over $600 dollars! It is SO nice to see a company that cares about their costumers and don't rip them off! It is so rare these days.

This gentleman has provided a fantastic ‘how-to’ video. Every step is performed perfectly in order. There are other videos out there, but this is the best. Take notes or watch this video on your iPad and do as he does, pausing the video as needed. You can’t go wrong. Each step is explained at the proper time in the proper sequence. No cover is replaced or power switch turned on, until it’s time. It is my favourite ‘how-to’ for flushing my Navien water-heater.

Great video - thank you! I would like to add a couple of critical additional pointers that were omitted from your tutorial: 1) If there are multiple units running in Cascade mode, before flushing, you MUST FIRST take them out of Cascade mode, by doing the following (If you do not do this, the Cold Water service inlet will not allow water into the unit and your pump will be dead-ended): - Turn on all water heaters using the Power button. - On the master water heater, press and hold the Diagnostic and Reset buttons for more than 5 seconds. The water heaters will revert to independent operation. Then, turn the units off and they will be ready for flushing. - After flushing and maintenance are complete, turn on all water heaters using the Power button. - To reinstate Cascade mode: A. On the unit you intend to be the Master water heater ( I rotate mine every year), press and hold the Diagnostic and Up(+) buttons for more than 5 seconds. “MA.00” will appear on the display to confirm that this water heater is set as the master. B. On the slave water heater, press and hold the Diagnostic and Down(-) buttons for more than 2 seconds. “SL.01” will appear on the display to confirm that this water heater is set as a slave. C. Repeat step 2 to configure the rest of the slave water heaters in the system, i.e., "SL.02"... D. On the master water heater, press and hold the Diagnostic and Up(+) buttons for more than 5 seconds. All the display screens on the configured water heaters will return to the temperature display. 2) If you are using External Recirculation, don't forget to clean that Recirculation Inlet filter in addition to the Cold Water Inlet filter (they are exactly the same filters). 3) After draining and before flushing, DO NOT FORGET to move the lever on the Safety Relief Valve back down to its normal operating position! I learned this mistake the hard way, after I had pumped 5 gallons of vinegar into the drain because the safety valve was still open!! DUH LOL!!

@@Hall7180 Yeah it seems a few items have changed. First, that air filter doesnt point straight out the unit, it points toward the front right corner and you only need to remove the horizontal screw that keeps the filter in place. Secondly, the dirt/debris trap in the middle is no longer circular, instead is now a very long, rounded edge rectangular piece. Otherwise it's all the same.

Called a plumbing company and they wanted to charge me $250 to descale my navien. I really like this plumbing company as they always do very good work, but in this case, I’m glad I held off and decided to see if I could do it myself. This is easy stuff, the only thing you need to get is a submersible pump. Those go for $50. 2 gallons of white vinegar = $10. So my first go around I will already have saved myself $190. And cleaning after that, I’ll keep $240 in my pocket. And all because of this video! Thank you for putting this on.

Thanks so much for this FREE tutorial! I've now performed this twice in the past year after experiencing warm water with 'hot' turned all the way up. We were able to survive a few days by 'tricking' the system--we'd run 2 faucets when we wanted hot water from 1. The whole process can take about 1.5-4 hours, depending on your skill, availability of tools, and access. We used a non-submersible pump from Harbor Freight both times. It's just a matter of matching up the correct fittings...

Great video, thank you. A few things I did after I was finished with the flush. #1, I took the used bucket of vinegar outside, and before I dumped it out on the ground , I neutralized it with a cup of baking soda , and poured it out where there were no plants close by. I didn’t feel comfortable pouring it down a drain into my septic system. # 2, I rinsed everything thoroughly with water that had come in contact with vinegar , including hoses, pump, and tools. # 3, have an old towel rag near by when you are doing the flush, because you will get some water or vinegar on the floor.

Thank you for this video. I paid the plumber to do this service twice, what they charge is more than what i want to pay. My son and brother did this simple maintenance with me referring to this video when we weren't sure. It is so simple but my tank is outside mounted on the wall. If i had to do it again i would never install it outside. The cold water pipes will freeze and all it takes is one time for this to happen and mine did the first two years of installation. I blame myself for dreaming on that no freeze thing. But at least it's not in the crawl space like my electric heater was. So far no more freezing but outside unless it NEVER gets below freezing don't . The only mishap was they forgot to brace the hose during the descaling and got a vinegar shower.

I see that this post is 3 years old, so I don't expect this to be answered... but thought I would give it a try. I have a Navien NR-210/249A that is installed in my garage and providing hot water for the floor. It is a closed loop system and I have done NOTHING to service it for at least 5 years, except to make sure that the water in the system is topped up. FIrst off, it has been amazingly reliable and an amazing heating system... I don't have many luxury items in my life, but I consider this to be one, haha. I broke my knee recently, so I haven't been spending much time in my garage. I waddled out today and noticed that it seemed cold... I noticed the batteries in my thermostat were low, so I took them in the house and replaced them. I reinstalled the thermostat and when it tried to start up, it sounded odd. After a few minutes of trying, it gave me a code of E022 (cold water inlet thermistor 1- short) I also noticed that the water pressure in the system seemed to be really high (20-30 psi.) I thought it may have frozen, so I turned on my Mr heater that I have as backup heat. I left that on for a few hours. I returned and plugged the heater back in and it tried for a while and I could hear what sounded like water in the exhaust vent... After trying to start it 3-4 times, I shut the inlet and outlet valves off, drained the pressure off and then pulled the dirt trap off... lots of nasty black water came out. I put everything back together, plugged it in and now it seems to be working fine. No sound of water in the exhaust, it fires up and sounds normal... altho it did make a odd squealing / grinding noise a few seconds after running. I assumed that was air purging from the pumps or exchanger. If anyone has thoughts on this I would love to hear them. I will keep an eye on it and see if it keeps working or not. My biggest fear is that the heat exchanger has a crack and that leaked into the exhaust, but I would assume that that would just drain out the condensation drain thing ...

Best review yet. Clearly spoken and understandable. I got caught last year on the dirt trap because the O ring slipped off and left me in a lurch...no info on it. But now, yes Sir! Great job.. and tanks or thanks!

I just serviced a unit that hasn't been cleaned in probably 9 years. The worst was the dirt trap. The water that was in it was all black. Literally black. Thanks for the video, it helped and gave me the confidence to do it.

Thank you for detailed video, I installed Jomar tankless water heater valve, so making cleaning much more simplify, no garden hose needed, less valve to close/open.

I was getting a 10 E 027 error code on my navien tankless. I followed this video step by step and it fixed my problem! I had a plumber come out before I saw this video and he was going to replace a part that didn't even need replaced for 280$. So this video saved me a ton of money! Thank you!

Thank you for a great tutorial! I'm curious about a couple changes from the other video. Like not draining the house hot water lines, not opening the hot pressure release valve. Also no mention about the recirculation line & clean out?

I took notes so I could refer back to what Ray said. Here's what I got: - turn off gas - turn off power on water heater unit - remove 4 cover screws - unplug water heater - remove and clean cold air intake filter - reinstall cold air intake filter - close hot and cold isolation valves - remove service valve caps and attach houses, place hoses in 5 gal bucket, open valves, let drain for a few minutes - remove and clean cold water inlet filter (have bucket ready) - reinstall - pull pin, remove and clean dirt trap - reinstall - descale heat exchanger with 5 gallons of vinegar in bucket - attach hoses to pump - cold side attached to pump, hot side in bucket - let run for 45 minutes - flush out vinegar: - close both service valves - run garden hose out of hot water service valve to appropriate drain - keep hot isolation valve closed - open hot water service valve - KEEP HOT ISOLATION VALVE CLOSED - open cold water isolation valve - flush for 10 minutes - close hot water service valve, then remove hose - recap service ports - turn cold water on - turn hot water supply on - put cover - turn on gas - hit power button

2 gallons of vinegar into a 5 gallon bucket. Also, after the 10 mins of flushing out the system with cold water, I noticed the cold water intake is in the closed position, which he doesnt mention doing in the video.

Excellent video. I have a Navien tankless. I've been doing the annual vinegar cleaning for a few yrs now on my own. I didnt know about the cold air inlet filter or the dirt trap Easy fix! Mine was full of small bugs on the air inlet and had some dirt in the trap. Thanks for those 2 segments. I will add to my annual maintenance.

Very good video and informative. Your descaling video is also excellent. A few points for that video which comments are turned off. You cleaned the water inlet filter twice. Also opening all the hot water faucets does not drain the pipes with the heater hot water cutoff turned off. Everything else is spot on! 👌

"Set customers up to succeed? Remind us to do this every year?" I appreciate where he's coming from, he explains it very well & the video is very informative but this is quite a bit to do every year for the average homeowner. My high efficiency heater has failed numerous times over the years because of error codes most likely because maintenance wasn't done. For me I'd rather stick with a regular water heater that lasts 10-15 years without my having to deal with error codes & take care of cleaning it every year.

Great video. My heater was installed 8 years ago. The installer did NOT explain any of this. Of course, I have been having issues with Code 16 for some time. Calls to Navien fell on deaf ears. Today, after watching this video, I have purchased a pump, the hoses and the vinegar. Tomorrow, we'll be Code free and hot showers without the temperature going to cold, back to hot, then to cold, back to hot and then solid cold because of Code 16. Thanks for your great instructional video. Oh, my wife thankx you too !!
