What is a good source for maps of my area? Is it possible to buy printed maps or do I need to go online, try to create a custom map and send that off to be printed? Also, how large of a map would I need to fit about a roughly 50 mile long journey at the 1:24K or 1:50K scales found on the MC-2? I think I would need 2 or 3 adjacent maps but I'd appreciate advice from someone knowledgeable

Caltopo is pretty sweet and free. They use USGS and Forestry Service maps but you can print them yourself, packing tape them up and hit the dirt on the fly. When we do land nav practice runs and geocaching, that's the site we use.

There was a 10 bit week rollover on April 6 2019. You need to perform a firmware update to any GPS you are using.

Have you checked out the new Garmin Foretrex 601? I'm debating purchasing one for a big hiking trip. We've also got some big plans train for long range shooting. There is a ballistic calculator built into the foretrex 701. In your opinion for long range shots, would it be better to have a dedicated wind, weather and ballistics equipment like the kestrel? #geartasting

In the uk we use the Grid magnetic angle to get bearings with a map. The mnemonic is mag to grid get ride Gide to mag add. I would like to know why you don’t use mills be you ex military.

I only wanna know the temp when it's cold lol. I'm sure your dangling coin purse will let you know when its freezing. The pebbles will try to crawl back up in your belly. Lol 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I used the 101 on deployments- hiking, picked up the 401 and 601. All are great. I was hit by an ied and the 101 held up - still works great. Just don’t like it doesn’t have a compass

A small pencil sharpener also makes awesome kindling out of small sticks.

You should never use an out of date magnetic declination on a map - maps are made based on true north, not magnetic north and the declination printed is just for your convenience (assuming it hasn't changed much). Always get the actual declination and set your compass to that.

#geartasting Can you explain the difference between UTM and MGRS?
