I held an ATC for many years. Had one long before Canada had a firearms licence. In those days it was very difficult to get a "carry permit". My method of carry was unrestricted, open or concealed carry, I chose concealed way more secure and way less looks and questions. The RCMP refused to renew mine for years. I applied every year they kept refusing for reasons not supported by law. This left me a defence if I needed it. Under the new and improved Firearms Act, I actually find the process easier. When I need to renew mine. I do it at a private range, on private property where there is a safe private shooting range. I am the range officer, any guest is a range officer. Private ranges DO NOT fall under the Firearms Act, regs. My handguns are associated to two addresses. I have a law enforcement background, I am well acquainted with use of force and when to and how to use a handgun for defensive purposes. My disappointments with the CFO for BC Yukon are as follows; Why do I need to report the discharge of a handgun within 24 hours? Their reason was because it is according to the CFO, it is illegal to discharge a handgun except on an approved range. ABSOLUTELY UNTRUE AND NOT SUPPORTED IN THE LAW. If a person is in lawful possession, has legally transported and is in an area where firearms can be safely and legally discharged it is legal to discharge the handgun. You could push this another step if you owned a prohibited weapon, AR 15 or a full auto; these can be discharged on a private range. The Firearms Act has no legal affect on a private range. Private ranges are just that, private, no members, no fees, no commercial shooting range activity. The range must be safe, all projectiles must remain on the property and you should let your neighbours know you shoot guns at your place. My neighbours don't tell me when they shoot a coyote or wolf or whatever they are shooting at. My neighbours are good folks don't care if you shoot and make noise. All lawful firearms owners should be allowed to use and possess their handguns in the same areas they can possess and use a long gun. Without any of the BS associated to the ATC of today. Licensed gun owners are proven safe, are vetted daily and are responsible. My reason for doing this over the years was to comply with and obey the law, to ensure I had the ability to protect my life or the life of another in my company from harm or death by dangerous wildlife. Apologies for the long read.

Maybe you address this later, but the handgun freeze is referred to as "legislation" just before 19 minutes in: it should be noted that the freeze was implemented with *no legislative authority* for nearly 2 months before bill C-21 received royal assent. You could say it was Canada's version of an executive order, but the process, in general, is so much more convoluted than that. The prime minister clearly made the decision, but the authority to make regulations is granted by the firearms act to the "governor in council". How many average Canadians do you think know, without a refresher on Canadian government, (heck, I don't know that I was ever taught this actually) that "governor in council" refers to a representative of a representative (because it's not the gov. General themself sitting there), in "privy council", which is actually a meeting where the pm makes an order. What a circus! It's almost as if it's intentionally abstract....

The gun restrictions are basically a power grab, and it did not work, for in Canada US everywhere, the criminals all have hand guns and AKs. Canada are one of the half dozen or so countries tainted by old British laws and cultures. Strange, when English kings need help centuries ago, the serfs were mandated to practice long bows on Sunday, that is the MG 42 of that era , Cresy, Agincourt. 13, 1400s. Some places in US literally mandate you to have a gun at home. In Florida, one sheriff went on TV something about saving tax payer money, if someone bust into your house, that is the Castle doctrine, you have a right to eject them with your 357 magnum or 12 gauge. Best be sure you stay in the house, and not standing even on the porch . In Canada, we are not allow to defend ourselves, we are supposed to die if we are attacked. There is no hope for this gov. , have to wait for the next one. In NY now, the law protect the criminals and they commit all kinds of robberies and assault penalty free. They can grab your wallet or handbag, but if you fight and assault them it is a felony. They made it about impossible to get a conceal carrying permit in NY and crime got much worse.

You folks are very nice and I appreciate how well you conducted yourselves during this interview. Civil, respectful, good humor….. and look at all the useful info you generated for us. Thank you. I have to say. The way that the authorities in Canada treat us, all these ridiculous hoops they make us jump through. This is no way to treat responsible, law-abiding people. They lack goodwill to the population and would rather stand at loggerheads with us than to dare make life a bit easier for us. Moreover, an armed population is a polite one. I believe that carry rights should be a common thing. As it is, people who have business in very dangerous country - with huge bears running around - are placing their life in danger. The logic employed by the government is “well, very few people are actually mauled”. To be in real danger is often not accompanied by a mauling but the danger still exists! You know what, the government in Canada is a joke. They will never change. So I say, we drastically reduce the size of the government. They have not earned my respect. Their treatment of us with all these regulations is reprehensible. The inches thick regulation documents do not result in more safety. Rather, due to the complicated process, safety is COMPROMISED. I have not seen a government less self conscious than that of Canada. Well wait. There was one. There was Fidel Castro’s regime in Cuba. In Canada, this has produced some sickening results. We are a nation of good little rule-following little bitches. Face it, decades of being over-governed has resulted in this maniacal condition. “We make me sick”. Beyond messed up!!

I am a retired member of the Armed forces and although I live in a rural area in Nova scotia where there are bears, linx, coyotes, etc, I thought that it would be acceptable for the CFO to grant me an ATT. I did not try to get it, but now that I am better informed, I won't be now. Too bad. Either way thank you both for the video.

21:11 This really depends on the laws of a certain state as some US states have mandatory waiting periods before you can take possession of your gun. Some states allow it while others don’t. For example, here in Washington State, we now have a mandatory 10 business day (2 weeks) waiting period as of 1/1/2024 before we are allowed to take possession of our purchased firearm.

I have my instructor certs for concealed carry handgun(instructor) from SigSauer Academy, along with a dozen other certs from various schools, and a lot of experience instructing both civilians as well as contractors for a couple PMC companies, both in Canada and the USA A couple things in this video I want to comment on - focusing on "smooth trigger press" and a number of other things said by both of the people in this video is very, very "old world" thinking and training. The most critical thing in accurate handgun shooting is the grip and maintaining that grip as it relates to keeping it on target with your sight picture. If this is done correctly, then trigger press doesn't matter, so long as the trigger gets pressed, your rounds will fly to where your sight picture is pointed. When shooters anticipate recoil, which is the most common issue in terms of missing the target, it's the moving of the handgun and breaking that grip to target lock that is responsible, NOT a "poor trigger press". Grip Grip Grip. Once a shooter has the fundamentals of operating the handgun as well as safe holster/etc ability, that should be the focus - training to maintain the proper type of grip and keeping it as motionless as possible while servicing the target. Everything else is a very, very small piece of the puzzle, or can even be discounted/ignored. One of the best handgun instructors in the world, who is a former US Army special missions unit assaulter and team leader, John McPhee, has created IMO - and many other's opinions - the best system for handgun shooting/fighting in existence. Rogers Shooting school and many of the other "top" schools are teaching the same principles and techniques now. McPhee teaches the grip focused system. There are even KZbin videos available where he explains it far better than I just tried. I realize that wildlife defense is different than "tactical" training in some ways, but the ability to put rounds on target from a holstered firearm is still the bottom line for both. I feel the instructor(s) here need to update some of their training, as they're focusing on older techniques, which have been greatly improved upon since the GWAT began. Very interesting video, thanks for posting it.

Toronto RPAL holder here who owns zero Rs, out of a total of 716,348 RPALs as of 2022 RCMP Commissioner of Firearms Report, how many RPAL holders are using or would need an ATC for their legally-acquired and possesed handguns to be used for a legit job anywhere in wilderness or a very remote and non-urban area? Maybe somebody would provide a percentage of such RPAL holders with a current ATC that work in a very remote and non-urban area anywhere throughout Canada! Alternatively, how many RPAL holders live in an urban area like Toronto or other large cities and have nothing to do with any wilderness or similar job-related work throughout Canada? Thank you.

There are any number of short rifles and shot guns that can be carried. All one needs is the license to buy long guns, ( non-restricted ). The law is, the fire arm must be completely covered, but if one is off the beaten path it is unlikely one will need to worry about that.
