I’ve been revisiting all your old videos and, no matter how many times I watch, I always learn something new. After I finish rebuilding my Tacoma engine, I’m totally going to sign up for your survival class, and make it a road trip! ATB, David

What a beautiful area you live in. i always mark my map if i notice some thing new. Those beavers can make some big ponds. In Vermont in my fathers old camp they flooded the whole valley. They came in and blew the dam up. I use google earth now when i go into a area that new to me it shows you everything. I always use maps if i can. great series Dave we all appreciate your knowledge that you share with us Thanks

I love this navigation series, probably my favorite series you have done. Very informative. The bush here in Victoria Australia is not this sparse though. There is 3 million acres of bushland in Victoria, though most of it is very dense with undergrowth higher than your chest and near zero visibility. Though the good thing about it is 99% of it has had little or no visitors since the gold mining days in the 1800's. Makes it a bit harder to navigate but the skills translate well and give names to techniques already in use.

Have you hunted the pipeline yet? I'd be putting some stands along it if you can hunt there.Trapping along that creek might be good too. You can download topo maps at the USGS website. Thanks for this one Dave, I love land nav. Keep up the fire.

mr. canterbury your videos are excellent. you're an incredible resource of information. is there any kind of wind baffling for your camera convenient to use when shooting these videos? wind seems frequent, and one really wants to focus on everything you say.

I see many of those contour lines on your map do not have numbers to show the elevation/altitude. I wonder if there is a way to work out whether they are a hill or a depression, or is it just finding as many matching features on the map to the surrounding terrain as possible to work out where you are.

Dave, Do you hve anything on bow drills or other quick fire means without using any carried tools? Just in case there was ever a time you were forced into an emergency situation where you were unprepared & have nothing with you.

Happy to see maps I made for 30 plus years used! Word of warning, most of the USGS maps have not been updated, so if a road or building is no longer there use the contours and water features. Note the publication date too, feel free to contact me with questions bkunert gmail

I've been getting my topo maps from MyTopo and I am wondering what scale you recommend to use. My current map of my home city and county is 1:50,000 with a 1 kilometer grid put over it. I want to get maps that are easier to use will hiking so I need to find a scale that works the best.

In your years of living, have you come across anywhere other than US Geological Survey, that will make maps of a particular area? Can read a map just fine using terrain association but Im a little picky and would like a terrain map made with MGRS grids.

For warm weather hiking boots I've logged hundreds of miles in boots from Vasque with neither a complaint nor a blister! Amazon has Vasque Men's Clarion GTX Hikers for around $110. I've worn those exact boots a lot! For cold weather I've got a lot of miles on a pair of Sorel Conquests in temps down to -35°. My feet have never gotten wet or cold as long as I was moving around. (I've never had a pair of boots that would keep my feet warm while sitting still. Battery heated socks!) $100 on Amazon!

Many people have no idea what contour lines are or what they mean. Perhaps you could have started with teaching map reading. Most important are how close they are to each other representing the difference in gradient. There is a difference between a cliff and a gentle slope in contour lines.

Herby, guaranteed that's not a Bigfoot at 5:30. Last year, Dave found three Sasquatch hunting on his property. After tying one arm behind his back, Mr.Canterbury proceeded to give each of them a sound thrashing and made them promise to tell all their buddies to stay away and never trespass again.

Yah beavers can wreak havoc on a maps accuracy. A uncle in Miss. left some bottom land lay fallow, didn't plant and when he went back to look it over beavers had made them selves a Lake. It took him a while to reclaim it. Them beavers didn't want to give up there hold on it . It seemed a little funny to some of us , but not to my Uncle!!
