My son enrolled in the HPSP as an alternative to incurring $300,000 to $400,000 in medical school student loan debt. While there are some drawbacks to serving as a military surgeon, overall he has found it to be an overall positive.

My son is looking to go to Med School. He wants to be a Sports Medical Doctor but our issue right now is how we are going to afford this. So he’s been thinking more and more about joining the Navy.

@@SSmith_713affording it isn’t much of an issue. Incurring debt isn’t something to be afraid especially if someone is going to be easily make over 500,000 a year after residency. For a sport medicine doctor. In a few years all that debt is paid off. Getting into medical school should be the focus rather than affording it

Whoop whoop, I note USF diploma behind you. Go Tampa! I was employed at Tampa's VA Hospital for 23 years, doing computers and then voluntary service, oh yeah, started in the library, so there's that. TSP is a great way of saving for eventual retirement. Thank you for your service, and thank you for anesthesiology. Putting people to sleep and making sure they wake up is important.

Steven, Thanks for what you do. I am a retired Navy Physician. I completely agree with you on the reasons to practice in the service.

Never heard you talk about the fact that the reason you don't make the big money is because the military is paying for you to get your medical degree.

I’d love to hear you take on doing Reserves in the military as a physician. Seems like it would be the best of both worlds.

Agreed, a little different for me as a nurse but I am a Navy reservist and I’m able to keep a super high speed civilian job as flight nurse and don’t have to worry about not enjoying my day to day work, and will always have the opportunity to go down range and serve if the need arises in the future. The special pay for a critical care nurse is also a VERY appealing addition for a nurses salary which makes all the stupid hoops you have to jump through like he mentioned worth it. I’m not sure if that would be the same for a physician earning 400k a year though.

You are very informative! I am interested in pursuing medical school! You have a great book shelf. I like your action figures! Essentialism seems like a great book to read! I was also looking into doctor's beyond borders!

Would you say the VA HPSP compensates the pay gap a bit more moderately than the strict military HPSP counterpart?. The community appreciates you as being a role model for those interested in Medicine Dr. Bradley.

That's just ONE of the many benefits of serving the military as a physician. I feel a lot of people down play the no med school debt thing. Yes you'll make more if you're a civilian doctor. But that's after many YEARS of residency AND many years of being an attendee. You ain't breaking 50k/year as a resident right out of medical school.
@TheMidnightGarnet4 ай бұрын
So after the 4 years of residency, can you apply for civilian jobs and increase your pay?

Hi Dr. Bradley, thank you for your video. Do you have an email I can send you a question I have?

So getting all your school paid for and serving for a set amount of time isn’t worth it? Leaving the military with your degree and having next to no debt isn’t worth it? How am I supposed too afford Med School in the civilian world?
@StevenBradleyMD2 ай бұрын
Financially, no IMO. Student loans are available.

How long is a contract for a Dr? Can you do your residency through the military? Does that count for the contract?

Steven, remember, you don't get the big $ for putting people to sleep. You get them for WAKing them up safely!
