It is pretty much a standard move to sortie the fleet from harbor in cases like this. At sea, the ships can maneuver to avoid the storm, while in port they’re sitting ducks.

I rode out a typhoon on a Navy Rescue and Salvage Tug back in the mid 70s, We departed Hong Kong and that shallow draft tug was being bounced around like a ping pong ball in a washing machine. They called me out of a Hotel my first night of liberty after a night of serious partying so it was an experience for sure. I found that I'm not one of those people who's prone to Seasickness. A lot of the crew were hurting but still managed to function and the cook had this big batch of Chili that seemed to have an extra helping of hot chili powder supposedly because of the difficulty for measurements under the severe conditions. It wasn't pleasant but it was survivable. ARS 7 USS GRAPPLE now belonging to the Taiwan Navy. Commissioned in the earlly forties and a real heavy duty workhorse. Stationed at Pearl. We towed a portable dry dock from Asia to California on that same trip. It wasn't fast but it could do the job.

40 years ago next month, I was fresh out of Navy Bootcamp in San Diego when I arrived in Pearl Harbor for my sea duty station as a deck ape seaman. My first day in Hawaii was followed by my first night at sea was riding out Hurricane Iwa with the rest of the 7th fleet. My ship was The USS Sample FF1048 a fast frigate with just 240 ft of waterline and a crew of 240 sailors. My first watch was going to be at midnight till 0400 in the morning. But until then. I was instructed to wait in my birthing space. They showed me how to get to the galley and head but didn’t have time to give me a true orientation of the ship as preparation to get underway had started hours before I arrived. I had no idea what I would be doing at 0000 until 0400 and there was nobody in the birthing space or galley to tell me. I arrived in the afternoon and wet got under way a hour before sunset when the deck crew began to come into the birthing space to see a unfamiliar sailor sitting at the card table in a fresh set of dungaree issued to every sailor in bootcamp. And obviously my first tine to wear them. “Do you know how to play Spades? You can’t sit there unless you know how to play Spades” I couldn’t make out who said it in the small group that began to gather at the sight of the FNG, The voice was heavy with years of sea weathered authority like it came out of a 60 year three pack a day smoker that lifted nothing more than a cup of coffee all day while yelling at his sons and grandsons go get shit done. “I got four hours until my first watch to learn. After that I don’t know if I’ll still be here to play. So, would mind teaching me Boats? “You don’t want to get sone sleep before your first watch, Bootcamp? “Nope, there now way I’m going to get any sleep. “Ok, you can play that seat until they call chow, then fuck off yo your rack until your watch . Don’t forget to tie yourself in. I don’t want to fall out of your rack when this ship starts to rock and roll.” “Rodger” “My name is, Petty Officer First Class Boatswain, Willy T Raines. You call me “Boats”. But don’t, if you can avoid it. Let’s play some Spades”. My first watch ended up beginning with Boats barking at me from the card table. “Bootcamp” Bootcamp” Bootcamp, It’s time to see what a hurricane looks like from the bridge and you are on the Helm! Your going to Helm this ship for the next hour at least and you are going to listen to every fucking word you are told up there. You are going to repeat every Oder starting now so everyone hears you. , You are going to do these things without questing why, how, or when. You will simply repeat the name of the rank and position on tge bridge what you are told and then execute the order. Once you complete the order you will report that you have completed the order you were given. By repeating g in as done Got it?’ “Got it” 2 hours latter in was still at the Helm because the seas were to rough to switch positions on the bridge why dodging other ships hiding between the islands from tge main force of the hurricane. To say I got addicted to tge adrenaline would be a gross understatement considering what I’ve done for the part 40 years.
