Chris Cassidy is currently ALONE on the US section of the International Space Station. How crazy is that? I really enjoyed speaking with him and Jonny. I started this process thinking the Seals probably focus on the ability to overpower the enemy and smash things, but it turns out humility and the ability to work on a team is by far the most important attribute. You can follow Chris and Jonny on twitter and Instagram (I'll put the links in the description). Thank you to those who are supporting Smarter Every Day on Patreon! Not gonna lie but.. When you get into intelligent territory things around starts becomes less important and selective, I can never see a full grown space war as most people who is educated enough to handle space missions will probably not see anything gain in using bullets against other people. Space Exploration is probably why War stopped. As Space Missions became a more union goal, despite race, country or anything... space is just as much space around all of us. No borders required : D

Don't belittle yourself, friend. An achievement is always an achievement, and while getting a truck license might not be as glorious as passing BUD/S, medical school or astronaut training, it is no walk in the park either, and something worth to be proud of as well. (I should know, because I got my truck license back in the 1990ies in the Austrian military, when The Powers That Be (in their infinite wisdom) decided that being able to drive trucks would be another useful skill for a young and energetic sergeant being trained to become a Special Recce operative.)

Johnny, what do you do for a living?" Johnny Kim: "Well ... I'm a Navy SEAL... and a Harvard trained medical doctor... and an astronaut in training to operate on board the I.S.S." Random dude and everyone that doesn't know Dr. Kim laughing loudly: "Hilarious! Great imagination, man! But seriously, what do you do for a living?" Man, this was so interesting. And I saw in one of the comments that Jonny had done another podcast with Jocko (who I had heard of, but didn't remember anything about). Saw a random comment about how his father abused his family and was ultimately shot by police in his house before Jonny enlisted. And I just finished listening to all 4 and a half hours of that interview. Wow. I take Jonny at his word when he says he's not the smartest or the strongest person, but he is certainly one of the most impressive. But he has both an intensity and a humility that shine through at all times. I was somewhat demotivated when I realize he's only a little older than me.. but seeing how he has approached overcoming obstacles from abuse to being shot at to medical school, I find it energizing to think that it's all about just setting one achievable goal at a time. Step by step by step. Even I can do that.

SUPERCAR GALAXY when I told my family I wanted to be a SEAL when I was 10 my grandfather, a Navy vet himself, gave me a couple spec ops books from all branches and said “read these and then decide if that’s still what you want to do”. It took the glamour out of it and put what they do into perspective. It didn’t change my mind but in-fact fueled me. However, shortly after I enlisted I was told I was partially color blind and I couldn’t do anything other than rescue swimmer in the spec ops community and since I didn’t have ANY other plans for my life I went ahead and went in as a seabee.

@CL CL I wasn’t talking just about military service in my comment, although that is service to all of us that benefit from the freedoms we enjoy as a result (I’m talking in the U.S. here). I am also talking about any type of service to others - volunteering at a homeless shelter or food bank, teachers who help our child learn, helping out neighbors after a storm. Those are also example of service to others.

Or be politicians in the GOP and and in the White House. We really need Navy SEAL Astronauts as senators and presidents nowadays. Cuz the political climate is can truly be an inhospitable and unpredictable place both physically and emotionally.

@@handlemonium You would have to wash their brains differently. It isn't an accident that Chris and the other SEAL dude used exactly the same words when they discribed what trident means to them, they had to hear those words/phrases million times during training. Humble personality will never strive to be a pollitician.
