My daughter is STG, she got picked for IUSS out of A school and did that for her first sea and shore tours. Now she is on a DDG and loves it. She made the selection board for Chief this year, so fingers crossed she gets selected!!

Im an Aircrew P3 AWO acoustic operator and I worked at IUSS twice. I worked with a lot of STG's at IUSS. I only picked this job cause I wanna fly. I couldn't imagine doing this job from a ship. Gross! I enjoy deploying to the Marriott resort for a 6 month deployment lol SEMPER PER DIEM

I was an STG in the late '60's, on DLG-34. Two of my Chief's came from the SOSUS world. They were very mysterious, all they would say is "It's a study of the ocean". You have to go to "O" school. Oceanography. The rating back then was OT, for Ocean Systems Technology. They made it sound very boring, you stare at lofar grams (like the dead TV channel) and change the paper all day. Except for the time they were tracking a sub. One of my Chiefs had been stationed at Point Sur and recounted how he drove the tapes of a contact to Navy Headquarters in San Francisco. They said for the facilities, all you see is a sign that says "NAVFAC". Ten or so years later, on road trips with my wife, I saw the sign! One was on Highway 1, at Point Sur, then saw another one on the coast outside Ferndale, CA. The road from Ferndale was close enough to the facility that I did a very slow driveby. :) Several years ago, one of my pool playing buddies (a woman) said she had been stationed at the Ferndale facility. There was another one in Coos Bay, Oregon, I think, and one in Pacific beach, WA. I think the one in Whidbey Island is still active. Sad to see that Clinton shut down most of them in the early '90's. There's a lot of it that has been declassified that you can find on google. Just start googling SOSUS and follow the leads. I just googled and according to a Reuters article, the NAVY is reviving and updating things to counter China. Very exciting. But I'm an old dog, 76 now. I was a sonar tech so I found it all very interesting. In fact, I designed an ignition timing controller that responds to knock (or PING) sensor. In my detection scheme, I used some sonar theory, so I like to say I'm still in sonar!

I’m going to BC in 2 weeks and my rate will be AECF, not sure what I’ll branch off to yet because I don’t know my talents yet so this will help me a lot for at least understanding what I’ll be doing. I remember the blue room when mom was enlisted but she was GSM

I had to do another exam before i got shipped out.. but it wasn’t that long After that they gave us our tickets then we went to the airport

@@jselectronics8215 Well, the “G” never stood for ground, and STG’s didn’t start working on SOSUS until the late 90’s. Those were OT’s at the SOSUS stations.
