I don't remember what I did at OCS in 1956, but we had much more classroom time than physical training. Some of my best instructors in my lifetime were those at OCS.

Short answer - To the civilians it looks like that stereotypical “You messed up! Drop and give me 20!” They think the drill instructor is acting just to make it seem like he’s tough but in reality he’s holding back because their families are here
