Nayib Bukele re-elected as El Salvador's president in landslide victory

Nayib Bukele secured his role as El Salvadoran President on Sunday after a landslide victory in the 2024 presidential election, making him the first-ever president of El Salvador to serve two terms.
Bukele, 42, declared himself the winner “with more than 85 per cent of the votes” on Sunday evening, before the official results had even been released. Though the final results are still being counted, provisional results show Bukele winning 83 per cent support with 31 per cent of the ballots counted.
“In all the history of the world, since the existence of democracy, never has a project won with the quantity of votes that we have won,” Bukele said on the balcony of the National Palace in San Salvador on Sunday. “Literally, it's the highest percentage in all of history. The highest difference between first and second place in history.”
Despite international scrutiny amassed from Bukele’s circumvention and dismantling of El Salvador’s democratic checks and balances, he is favoured by some residents for his fierce crackdown on gang violence.

Spent 2 weeks there in September, walking the streets, riding the buses, visiting museums, ruins, volcanoes, beaches, well immersed in the culture. Security everywhere, ready to help if trouble erupted, or answer questions from a lost visitor. No gang presence that I could see. A world of entrepreneurship emerging from the still heavily fortified streets. People out and about, living free and unafraid for the first time in 70 years. Celebrated their Independence day with locals. Incredible what one man was able to accomplish in 4 years, glad to see he can continue building the country's economy. Was an amazing experience.

Nayib Bukele is half Salvadorian, half Arabic. Not for nothing, he looks more Arabic in his features and reminds me of an Arabian prince. One thing for sure, he doesn't fool around and he had the Salvadorian police and military crackdown and arrest the gang members and suspected gang members and thrown them into a mega prison. As a result, Bukele became the gang members worst nightmare. He accomplished something that no other Salvadorian president was able to do.

he needs to stay just 1 more term and that's it. He cant over play this card. If he spends the next 5 years, keeping the ship running, with a huge emphasis on public benefit... He will be one of the worlds greatest modern leaders, and one of the historically best leaders in Latin American history. Thats worth more than some corrupt money or some silly mistake. 1 term is counter-productive. 2 terms seems to work out for a lot of countries. So see this as him fixing the system rather than taking advantage. Yes i dont think he should go for a 3rd term. He should go in have a really nice run of 2 terms and leave; that way he'll be remembered in history. A lot of successful people overplay their hands and start ruining their reputations; sometimes its not even their fault, its just a disaster will occur like COVID that throws them off track. From a purely democratic perspective, not everyone will agree that Bukele is a committed champion of democracy. But he’s what’s needed for El Savador.
