His name is Henry Metelmann. He fought in the Eastern Front and became a POW back in the UK and ended up settling in Guildford, England and married an English woman and raised a family here. He dedicated his life to getting the word out on what life was really like as a young person in Germany during the War and warning against extremism.

Like most other government institutions in National Socialist Germany, this one was modeled after its Soviet Socialist original: the Comsomol. Hitler Youth was named after the creator of National Socialist Germany, the Comsomol was named after Lenin, the creator of the Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics. Just like the Comsomol members were taught to follow the Leader (first Lenin, then Stalin), to march, to shoot, etc, the Hitler Youth were taught to follow the Leader (Hitler), to march, etc. The first were taught to hate the Kulaks, the second - to hate the Jews. Both the Kulaks and the Jews were eventually exterminated: 7 million Kulaks and 6 million Jews.

Was this a real account from a survivor who went through it all, or is this drama & a Civics lesson wrapped as this guy's youth story? How could his father really know how bad the Nazi Party was when they were yet to commit their crimes, when if he was a middle class or poor struggling German working guy why would he care that much if his concern is his next meal? Or how could he have suspected his kid was being poisoned with evil ideals? Holding prejudices against groups of people was normal all over the world for the common person in those days. The US & Britain were not any different than Germany in that respect. But these parents act like its an alarming sin. How many 11 to 12 year olds really grasp the concept of being able to make a distinction between what is learning factual material, & what was dogma, propaganda, & or the teachers opinions? Especially in old Germany when people strictly did what authorities told them (as was most societies until western nations became more affluent decades later.) This is a great lesson for youth & adults this fantastic series, but I find much of it was acted out in a fictional manner to make a point about historical events in some people's early lives back in WW2.

That youth was the best youth of every time for Germany. Last healthy and with ideals. The Volksgemeinschaft. Now? Our decadent society destroyed all.
