Fluss Stahl means fluid steel, ergo not Damascus. The receiver was case hardened. Your Gustoff Werke shotgun was made by the former Simson Co. of Germany. Before WWII the German (Nazi) government forced Jews from manufacturing guns. The following year the Nazis made firearm ownership by Jews unlawful. The Simpson family fled Germany. The Nazis took over the firm and renamed it. Your gun is nice. I have several prewar Simson shotguns. That N stamp below the eagle stands for Nitro or nitrocellulous (smokeless) powder. It is a proof mark. The shield marking is the city of Suhl Germany crest. Your shotgun is a civilian firearm not something issued to soldiers. 70mm (long) 16 gauge shotguns made before the end of WWII are scarce. I believe the 2 3/4" (70mm) shot shell began appearing in the USA in the 1930's. Following WWII it became the standard.

Yea i found everythung you jist mentiomed after i made this video.. gustloff werke was name for wilhelm gustloff a nazi asassinated in 36. They named a medical ship after him too. In fact that ship is the worst disaster for human life in history. Was sunk near the end of ww2 by the russians when evacuating people and i forgot how many died but i think it was like 10k people. I dont know how you feel about me fixing this gun. I welded the broken trigger levers back together. Filed em down smooth adjusted them. Then i got a 1900 remingtons safety spring. Which unfortunatly was longer than the broken safety spring on this so i had to chissle the inner wood back some to make it fit. Now the safety worka. And the stock inside was ao badly broken it was split completetly i could fit a pencile in between the split which went out the back by the safety and half way down the wrist. So i noticed someone tried to epoxy it once before. So i decided to drill into the side of the stock through the thicker parts and i hammerd wooden dowels inside with epoxy. And epoxy all along the split. Then i used walnut plugs and lintseed oil to match it to the original stock as best as i could. I tested it at the range and it worked. Gun fires now. Even tried both triggers and the repair held up.

@@jeepsblackpowderandlights4305 I have several older guns that I took pity on and bought. Two had cracks at the wrist. Used epoxy and toothpick pins for repairs. The worse required quite a bit of fitting following the epoxy. Both are holding together.

That craftsmanship is insane. Looks to be in excellent shape, and I always love to see a double barrel shotgun lol. Incredible find.

Just needs cleaned up. That barrel needs cleaned up. The oil and grease needs cleaned off. And that orange stuff on it needs cleaned. I honestly would like to take it fully apart. But those engraved flat head screws look very fragile.. so ill probly leave it alone inside and not take it apart Only thing bad is the stock. Wood has a bit of wear and dents.. but still shiney. And the barrel inside and outside is perfect. I bet itll shoot great once its repaired.

As a German i love side-by-side shotguns (and i love so many american firearms as well;))! Thery´re elegant, light and stylish - What a find, congrats! If you can get your hands on a "Luftwaffendrilling" - do it! A "Drilling" is a very unique german firearm in my opinion. And Terry is right: 16g by 70mm (or 65mm) used to be a very common caliber (nowadays it´s mostly 12g over-and-under). I own a "Drilling" (2x 16g by 70mm an below a 7 by 57mmR rifle barrel) and a 16gx70mm shotgun both made by "Sauer&Sohn Eckernförde" in the 50s. They are brilliant guns! Is there a english word for "Drilling"? In german it means "drilling siblings"... "Fluss-Stahl" is a certain carbonized iron (i think invented by Mr. Siemens and others) and "Krupp" is the company that made the steel. By lads - take care!

Its the same as my sauer DB theN is nitro proof barrels ie smokeless powder , brownells acraglass is the only type of gun expoxy you want to use get a good gun Smith screwdriver set drop out the bottom plate remove the trigger sears only and drop the stock out repair as needed and refit the recoil bearing surface in the stock. Acraglass is so strong you will not have to dowel spreading the crack force AG epoxy in with compressed air clamp for 24 hours off the gun! AS for the barrel boiling in distilled water will convert the rust into black oxide then a reel wheel buff , or a very fine brass steel wool available from brownells or just a good ol tooth brushing after boiling, light oil afterward ( ballistoll oil , degrease again good ol floor pastewax melted on with a hair dryer, or go old school and paint barrels with bullseye shellac use a very fine high quality brush,

16 gauge X 70mm is standard 2 3/4 inch shot shells. Most pre-war Germanic shotguns, 16 or 12 gauge, are chambered for 2 1/2 inch shells. Not rare at all! Normally, RST has a large selection of short shot shells for old shotguns. It needs a good cleaning.

las espigas de madera se quiebran; lo probé en mi sauer&sohn, suhl. Podrías probar con pasantes de metal, pegados con cianocrilato, dejando un leve huelgo, y desengrasar.

I have three similar guns. a 37, a 72 and a 73. They didn't seem to change the design or the level of craftsmanship - even during Russian occupation - at all. The current Merkel side by sides seem identical..

I use a Jb weld liquid epoxy. With wooden dowels. I drilled like 4-5 spots through the side of thr gun in thick spots where thr giant split was. And i hammered wooden dowel with the epoxy inside. And also used th3 epoxy on the split itself. Then i drilled slightly into the dowels and used walnut caps to cover it and then lintseed oil to match the walnut with the original walnut. You can see where i did the dowels.. but thats ok.. Its not terribly visible. Snd the shotgun has held up since just fine. Some people might be mad i drilled into the wooden stock of a gun this old. But its either that or never being able to use the gun again. I also had to weld inside the gun too fix both broken trigger levers. And i had to chizzle more room for a new safety spring as the old one was broken. And th3 new one was slightly longer
