Nazi propaganda film from 1940 showcasing the battleships Gneisenau and Scharnhorst. (This is for historical purposes only. I do not support Nazis.) (spoiler - the Nazis lost. The ships were sunk 1943 / 1945)

A rare piece of footage about life aboard a warship in ww2. If this was the Scharnhorst, then all but 36 of these 1,968 men and boys would perish when the ship was sunk at the Battle of North Cape on the 26th of December 1943. Thanks for the upload. It's hard to find footage like this.

Gneisenau and Scharnhorst were of course not battleships. They were battlecruisers.

Battleships.

@@nikolagosaric3039 11 inch main battery & 31 knot speed= battlecruiser. 14 inch armor belt= battleship. When they met convoys escorted by actual battleships, such as the Ramillies and Malaya (15-inch min battery), Gneisenau and Scharnhorst had to run. Scharnhorst was eventually sunk by battleship Duke of York off North Cape while trying to escape. In short, they were not sufficiently armed to fight real battleships, but could outrun them. Like battlecruisers.

The first ship you see in the film is a heavy cruiser, most likely the Blücher (sunk in the Oslo fjord in April 1940).

I noticed they didn’t show how the gun breech mechanism worked, to prevent patent thief?

This film was produced in 1940. This is probably not the best time to show the British in detail how your weapon worked.

It's a shame to think that all these fine young men died , they were just doing their duty same as our guys.

Having the word in the title that looks like the English word "fart" is appropriate for a Nazi movie.

+Chris D. It must be for that reason the Allies made the Antiqua typeface compulsory after the war. To prevent any misunderstanding. 😊
