I had the privilege of see Larry play in college then into the pro's and saw him play against the best of the era and I can't think of any player that was better than Larry. He truly is Larry Legend.

The thing that amazes me is how he played every game like it was the only thing that mattered. Diving after balls and abusing his body when the game didn’t matter and it was regular season. Besides the brain it was the heart. He would also fight anyone. Used to run 10 miles after games. He maximized everything he had and gave it every ounce he had. And today they do time management?

I watched Gretzky here in Edmonton in the early and middle 80s. He has said " i never took a night off because hard working people came to see me and i didn't want to dissapoint them" same as Larry, legends.

My favorite players? Bird and Hakeem. The only person stopping Bird? Bird. He injured his hand in '85 Conference Finals and his back a few years later. GOAT career? It's Mj. Taking the last shot in any game? MJ and Bird. That's it.

Lakers fan here. Celtics-Lakers match ups were the best! In a tight game, seconds to go, you FEARED that Bird was going to get the ball. I used to watch the clock as the Celtics brought the ball down court, I would think "Bird is gonna shoot and score, that will leave 4.3 seconds on the clock..." You assumed he would make it since he did 99% of the time.

My dad worked at Stop and Shop bakery next to the old Garden… let the players park in their spots, used to let us in the back door for free games. Best part of my childhood!

This is one of the reasons why Larry Bird is one of my favorite players. Now, don't get me wrong, l like Michael Jordan too but Larry Bird always looked like he never missed a shot. As a matter of fact, when he played on the 1992 Olympic Dream Team basketball team, l don't think he missed a single shot during that whole series. I'm not talking about in just one single game; I'm talking about in all those games when he would be put in the game. At least l don't remember seeing him missing any.

No amount of physical advantages can beat a genius like Larry Bird. He would do the exact same thing against today’s players & leave them with their jaws dropped to the floor.

Not only was Larry 6’9” but the league was a lot smaller then. Seven footers were rare and generally not very skilled. His size / skill combo was incredible.

These ultimate competitors, the alpha dogs of the NBA when the NBA was (in my opinion) the best, have the utmost respect for Bird. Larry said that he learned his court demeanor from some of the Black guys he played against as a kid at the local hotel in French Lick. Seems like he talked crap just to make the game more interesting.

People never mention one of the things that made bird unguardable was his shot release. It was behind his head. I never saw his shot blocked in his entire career. Almost impossible.

He never let his teammates get back on defense while he stood there crying to the refs. Larry was no cry baby, or excuse maker. He was a team leader and made his teammates better. LeBron is way back, behind Bird

Being a fan in the 70's, 80's, I cant stomach todays creampuff, no defense, guys who care more about stats, $, than winning. You drove the hole back then, you did so at risk of your career.
