Johnson was significantly more talented than Erving.
@vdLeo-je6os2 ай бұрын
@@racebannon2332How do you figure that?
@racebannon23322 ай бұрын
@@vdLeo-je6os really? Erving was a one dimensional player & would never come close to the NBA today. I played college ball and the Dr was one of my favorites. Erving was a gifted athlete in his era however he was a mediocre defender & passer, poor outside shot, poor ball handling skills. His greatest ability was his vertical leap. Bird, Johnson, Cummings, King, etc were all significantly better players. Erving was significant in his contribution as an ambassador due to his charisma, poise & naturally his high flying skills. I believe Erving was very relevant but certainly not the most skilled.

@@racebannon2332 Next generation star wings like Dominique Wilkins, MJ, etc. revered Dr. J so much that it would be unfair to call him overrated.
@racebannon23322 ай бұрын
@@vdLeo-je6os I’m not suggesting he was irrelevant. On the contrary, I was only stating the obvious limitations of his game. Prior to Bird & Magic, he was the most prominent player in the league, including the ABA. Great legacy & a stellar influence for generations. Be well

Congratulations to Marques Johnson. The 5-time NBA all-star will have his No. 8 jersey retired by the Milwaukee Bucks. He was City Section player-of-the-year at Crenshaw High before winning an NCAA title with UCLA. Johnson has been inducted into the College Basketball Hall of Fame, and his No. 54 jersey hangs from the rafters at Pauley Pavilion.

Between his rookie year (1977) and his final year with Milwaukee (1984), Marques Johnson was definitely a superstar. Marques could do it all: shoot, rebound, defend, pass, and could handle the ball like a guard. He was a great player who went toe-to-toe with Dr. J in the 1981 playoffs; scoring 36 in Game 7.

Great to hear al these legends talk about another legend. Interesting comment from Bob Lanier. I've been reading a few of the comments and if it's as you guys have mentioned, and Marques Johnson IS NOT a HOFer, that's rediculous! There was very little that he couldn't do. He had the strength of a power forward, the quickness and foot speed of a small forward and a very high level of intelligence for the game itself. A flair for the dramatic, leaping ability and a designed system of play surrounding Dr. J, in my opinion was the only thing that separated he, and Johnson's games. Doc was, in my opinion allowed to operate more on his own in Philly's system then Johnson in his! I did have the pleasure of going to the Spectrum in Philadelphia to see games in their first round matchups back in the 80's. It almost seemed like a given, that they played one another, (Milwaukee and Philly) in the playoffs every year. Big Bob, I feel you Brother! I'm riding with the guy I went to war with and who fought with me in the trenches all day too.....
@DeeNice6814 жыл бұрын
I agree with you on flair for the dramatic, and designed system for Doc, but Marques actually could jump as high as Julius. Check 17:55 of this video m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/eanCZmCAbadlgZo, he's dunking over Daryl Dawkins who jumped super high. Also check out this alley oop attempt against the Spurs m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/rKGVZ4B-qqZlgrM at 54:34. I also have a video of him catching a outback above the rim one handed against the Bulls. He was one of the best leapers in the league, just didn't show it as much as Dr. J!

Dr. J. was my hero but--for a couple of years--Marques was the best. A Sports Illustrated article written when Bird & Magic were young asked which one was the best player in the NBA, then said neither--that Marques Johnson was. Yeah, that went a little too far. Besides being a college basketball NCAA Player of the Year, Marques Johnson was the most handsome guy to ever play in the NBA. I'm not gay, but if I woke up tomorrow in my bed with my brain in young Marques Johnson's body instead of my fat, short, ugly old one, I'd feel like I'd won the lottery. My wife wife would be freaked out, but would be thrilled if I could prove it was me inside. I'd still probably suck at basketball though--Marques Johnson had a coach father, & played for John Wooden & Don Nelson. As the video states, he was a really smart player.
