The James Harden Step Back doesn't always get called a travel by NBA referees. Zach Zarba, a 15-year NBA referee, is here to weigh in on whether or not the move is a travel. He takes a hint from when the ball is gathered.

Following is a transcript of the video:
Zach Zarba: My name is Zach Zarba and I'm a 15-year NBA referee.
Some players have a controversial step-back jumper. They drive hard, then step back to create space and shoot. James Harden's is particularly controversial because he takes several steps back instead of just one hop.
Zarba: One of the huge misconceptions in the NBA is how much our players practice. These player practice these moves over and over and over again. And there are subtle differences in the traveling violation in the NBA vs. high school and college. So I would ask people to look at when the ball is gathered. Okay, if you look at when the ball is gathered, that pivot foot is not the first step. That is the zero step. So, after that pivot foot, when they step back into a 1, 2, that in the NBA is a legal two-step.

Taylor Liu if you're talking about the one on Wiggins, that isn't a travel. When he gathers the ball it's just after his foot left the ground making it his gather step and making the two steps after legal.

@@vnorm2907 I'm from EU and just recently I started noticing that NBA doesn't actually enforce the rules. The game is oriented towards penetrating to the 3 pointer and than giving the ball to the most agressive big guy to slam the basket while carrying the ball. Not only that but NBA doesn't call block fauls properly. If there is a player defending the basket, and he suddenly stops on both legs and does a block, and you kick him to the floor, it's a faul. In the NBA I constantly see big guys penetrating violently through a block and slamming the basket without being called out for a foul.

Prince Sarpong The gather step has NOTHING to do with dribbling in the rule book. It has to do with catching a pass on a fast break type situation where there is no dribble. The rule has ALWAYS been 2 steps after the dribble is discontinued. ALWAYS. They just dont enforce it anymore to allow their stars to create their own shots and score easier and fool simpletons like you into thinking this has always been the way the rules have been enforced.

The 0:26 was indeed a travel, but would be difficult to at game speeds, i slowed it down to 0.25x to count. He gathers the ball on his right foot (Step 0), pushes back for the step back with his left (Step 1/pivot foot), lands on his right again outside the 3 pt line (Step 2) but his left foot (the Step 1/pivot foot) touches the ground before he shot the ball

Watch Giannis. Watch a full game of his and u might just get to enjoy the treat of watching him sprint from one end of the court to the other without putting the ball down. Obvious exaggeration, but if u watch Giannis I honestly believe somewhere around 90-95 percent of his baskets come from either walking during the shot, or traveling to get open in the first place. Horror show.

This is such BS though, because in other clips he gathers the ball with two hands, then slides his foot several feet, then takes another 2 steps. This ref just showed a clip of him having his foot planted on the two handed gather, and then James takes 2 steps. It's like the NBA just doesn't want to admit the problem. Many players have caused the rules to get changed because they showed how broken a rule is. Yet the NBA refuses to address this 3-4 step epidemic we're in? How are kids going to learn how to play basketball if nobody knows how many steps we're legally allowed to take anymore? What's even worse is if the NBA currently allows 3 steps between dribbles, and a gather counts as two hands, what stops a player from taking 3 steps with the ball in 1 hand, gathering and taking another 2? This would be a 5 step legal play apparently! If they allowed 3 steps after gather then we could potentially be seeing 6 steps soon.

BULLSHIT. A STEP IS A STEP. SO BASICALLY THEY'RE SAYING JAMES HARDEN CAN HOP BACKWARDS FOREVER AND NOT BE CALLED FOR TRAVELLING. SO HE HOPS BACK, THEN REALISES IT'S NOT ENOUGH SO HE HOPS AGAIN THEN SHOOTS. IT'S NOT TRAVELLING BECAUSE HE PRACTICED IT OVER AND OVER AGAIN. SO DUMB

Jimmy nguyen ... okay, yes i know there are a lot of miss calls but then we have to realize that james harden always almost get away with it everytime. It has been a few years already and still the NBA is not doing something about it? Ill tell you again, he always gets away with it! the inconsistency is consistent with harden. and also the NBA has not done anything to solve the way harden clips the arm of a defender and make it look like the defender fouled him. LOL you cannot just say this is because of inconsistency.

Jimmy Nguyen.. yheap i get your point with it but the reason why i am taking this up on harden is because he gets away with it every game, every single game. Today he grabbed Exums arm and hit his face with the ball and still the call was on Exum. he always does that and the NBA still hasnt issued a solution for that, I know you said people who drive more to the basket get the benefit of the call BUT if you look at what harden is doing..... its literally different from everyone else. He grabs and clips the arm of the defender, someone like Kevin Love could be injured with that kind of contact and he always gets away with it.

The 0th or "gather" step is a relatively new rule (LeBron/Wade Miami time frame). I remember at the time that they actually said it was introduced to legitimize footwork that was being used all the time in the NBA - specifically the way a lot of guys executed a spin move (queue video footage of LeBron and Wade). Even more stupid, you don't count the 0th step until after the gather. So if you're in mid-stride with both feet off the floor when you catch the ball, the first foot to touch down is 0, then you get a 1-2. If I take all of this into account, I can sort of explain the first step-back in this video from Harden. But I don't want to take all of this into account. I want them to call a travel … because they made a stupid rule change and like everything, it's being exploited … and it's really a travel. So call a travel.

Older games still used gather steps. The problem is refs deciding the player stopped dribble. In the 1st 3 at 0:26, he definitely traveled. He picked up, hopped on 1 foot, and then hopped back. The ref did not establish the ball "picked up" until the hop. In that split second of action it's a tough decision.

None of the examples shown of Harden's step back shots are the ones anyone is complaining about. The man clearly takes FOUR stutter steps back or to the side during a lot of his "step back" shots. It's travelling, and you don't have to be a 15 year NBA ref to see it.

It wuldnt b boring it wuld make players get back too fundamentals n playing the game the correct way...traveling n moving screens are the 2 most ridiculously non calls refs don’t make which makes it hard for us high school officials because players see nba players get away with it n think it’s ok...or pushoffs wen a player is crossing over or step backing on someone...
