NBA Shooting Secret : How to step on 3 point line and get long distance 2 pts field goals
@bigstudwithaguitar8 жыл бұрын
"The squeak is how you really know it's being done right" LOL! Did anyone notice that when he ACTUALLY went up for a shot, there was no squeak? He only squeaks his shoes when he's demonstrating how to boost step, but when he actually shoots, he doesn't do it. He's in the fog, yo! He THINKS he does one thing, teaches others to do it, and practices as if he were doing it... but when he actually shoots, he reverts. Squeaking your shoes (intentionally) is useless. A little incidental squeaking is fine... but when you are going out of your way to create forward momentum for your feet upon landing (which is what causes a squeak) how can you POSSIBLY claim to be locking your feet into your shooting stance? Not only that, but you have to flex your quads at the exact moment you land in order to squeak your shoes (go ahead... try it)... but in order to dip your hips, you have to relax your quads in a controlled manner and allow your butt to lower. Make no mistake about it, squeaking your shoes here will actually usually indicate that you are NOT in a good muscular readiness to shoot... plus, it's hell on your knees for absolutely no reason. Squeak on a crossover... not on a shot.
@skylerdrabing43238 жыл бұрын
I would say it's more so that Nurse isn't a perfect shooter rather than he's a hypocrite, which is basically what you're implying.
@bigstudwithaguitar8 жыл бұрын
Skyler Drabing No... not a HYPOCRITE... I said "In the fog" I assumed most people would understand the reference. The reference is about the "pro shooting system". They coined "in the fog" to mean people who teach one thing without realizing that they aren't actually doing that thing. The example they are referring to is that COUNTLESS coaches, NBA players, shooting coaches, etc... actually refer to squaring up their shoulders and their feet with the basket... but they don't. Steph Curry is actually one of them. These people, when they are teaching someone to shoot, actually tell people to point their toe at the basket and have their shoulders symetrical for the shot. In actuality, they all are actually leading with their shooting foot. Another example from the series are people (like JJ Redick) that advise that you jump straight up and down when you shoot... but that's not what they do. JJ Redick sweeps and sways (and so does everyone else) but people "in the fog" still claim that they line up their feet and jump straight up and down. That's what I'm saying. This guy is saying that squeaking is an indication of sound form... but when he actually shoots, he finds it oddly impossible to maintain "squeaky" form. That's because squeaking your shoes requires you to tense your muscles... but dipping for a shot requires controlled relaxation of your muscles. Also, your feet are highly responsible for getting your balance prior to jumping, but if you are punishing your feet to the floor, your pedal musculature isn't actually being utilized for balance, and when you jump, you will be off balance. When he catches the ball and wants to squeak his feet... and fails... he doesn't necessarily know WHY he finds it so difficult to BOTH squeak his feet AND put up a shot... and perhaps he hasn't noticed. Perhaps if he were asked, he would have told you that he DOES squeak his shoes when he shoots on the catch... but he won't look at it the same anymore. ;)
@BrotherShine28 жыл бұрын
To me this basically the hop. If you're a hop shooter, you probably do this "boost step" a lot during live play. At the end of the day it's about getting your shot off as quickly as possibly while maintaining balance and power. I use both depending on the situation. Like he said, different clubs for different shots. You should master both 1-2 and the hop.
@larschristianalm8 жыл бұрын
Can we please once and for all stop the hop vs. 1-2 debate? You need to do both in different situations
@elvero6668 жыл бұрын

@bibbyboi8 жыл бұрын
I teach both and let the player decide which feels better. But we work on both in most shooting drills. I personally think the hop is better but like you said there are situations where you'll have to 1-2 so you should work on both. Also imo it depends on if you are a set shooter or jump shooter. For a jump shooter the hop has a much better rhythm and generates more power for the jump. Set shooters can go either way because generally you use your legs less(when you're older and stronger) so you need less force generated.
@bballbreakdown8 жыл бұрын
There is virtually no shot you can take 1-2 that you can't hop. I believe to be the most consistent, you have to do one or the other at least 3/4 of the time
@michaels69518 жыл бұрын
When you are not facing the basket and you are about to catch the ball. It's much easier to square and turn to the basket as you take a 1-2 step as opposed to hopping and turning to the net.
@juice98468 жыл бұрын
+BBALLBREAKDOWN This is false, as a shooter, curling into a shot of a pindown can only be done with 1-2 footwork. Hopping into it is very inefficient and tough to do. But I hop into most of my set shots because it leaves less room for error and it has a more mechanical, consistent feel to it.

@enrique82927 жыл бұрын
I binged watch pro shot shooting system vids back then and observed shooters feet after. from what ive seen they do a quick little shuffle of the feet so that when they catch the ball they are on the balls of their feet. that "shuffle" also helped them with the turn and since your feet aint planted and your knees slightly bent you have power and a quick shot up. but he is right you start your rhythm while meeting the pass. personally i prefer a one-two step. its just my natural rhythm even with layups and stuff like jumping for a block

But why would you lose power with the hop but not with the boost step. The way you create the upward energy with the boost step is exactly the same with the hop. And looking at the demonstration, while it initially seemed to be a little different, when David actually started shooting the feet basically landed at the same time. So really, I wouldn't call this anything but a hop, just from a specific starting position.
@XxnotacookiexX8 жыл бұрын
You lose power on the hop because you catch the ball in the air, usually at the peak of your hop. With the boost step, you don't jump high enough to thud on the ground. I haven't actually tried it, so I don't know for sure, but that's what it looks like.
@tormentor918 жыл бұрын
I get what you're saying, but I don't think people really jump that high when hopping. I would say most players I see hop either lower or at the height David jumps in the video while shooting. Isn't that why it's called the hop anyway? You just hop, not jump. But I will test it out if I remember.
@kite0impulse8 жыл бұрын
You're right that the upward energy is created the same way, but the idea behind the boost step is that you begin generating energy BEFORE you receive the ball so that you can get the shot up quicker once the ball is in your hands. Whereas with the hop, you only begin generating power after the ball is in your hands
@ballinboxer36768 жыл бұрын
because the move is called "boost" so you generate power
@tormentor918 жыл бұрын
kite0impulse I understand the idea, but I don't think it really works that way, In both cases you want to create the energy as quickly as possible once you got the ball, and the primary objectives in both cases are good timing and adequate jump height. Just to make this clear, I'm really not arguing as much against the boost step, as I'm arguing that the boost step is just a hop with a fancy name.

As David suggest I do attack the ball when the ball is in the air, come closer to the ball but I make 1-2 step to prepare my foot when the ball is in the air. This is the most comfortable way for me. I use my legs before I shoot so I don't want to lose my power with hop step before I catch the ball. This boost step is also hard for me to perform

So this technic is basicaly just a hop into a 1-2. I use this myself at times for catch and shoot situations or sometimes shot fakes and it feels pretty good and quick. The only bigger difference between this and the regular hop is that with this boost jump you establish your back foot as the pivot right away and with the hop you dont. I like both but the hop is still more complete. Both way better than the regular 1-2 too.

It's still just a hop. You could keep your right foot forward and do a short quick hop like he's doing with his "boost step". Would be more universal so you can use either foot as a pivot foot all the time if needed. And his explanation of the hop not transferring power doesn't make sense to me. You can exploit the stretch reflex with a hop. That's why you actually jump a little higher when dropping off of a box first. just my 2
@bballbreakdown8 жыл бұрын
Good point - I think what David is worried about is that there is an upward motion in the hop - the way I teach it, there isn't - we should just call it a Drop, which is what it really is.
@bibbyboi8 жыл бұрын
That's a great way to say it! I'm going to steal that from you. lol. Also going to start calling it a Drop Stop instead of jump stop with my players. I'm sorry but this video was a bunch of hoopla, this boost step isn't going to really improve your shot. All you really need to do is practice getting your feet set fast and having your body aligned correctly. That's how a guy like Steph shoots so quickly. Regardless if it's a hop or 1-2 because he gets his feet set so quickly he's able to get his shot off fast
@skylerdrabing43238 жыл бұрын
"Boost step" is usually what people do to align quickly. Curry does it, but he doesn't punch the floor with his feet, it's a light bounce to the spot he wants to shoot. I think Nurse teaches it with a bit too much power. There should be more grace with it like Curry and Thompson's catch and shoot. Just jump into it, bounce and shoot.
@bballbreakdown8 жыл бұрын
Well, this does exactly what you're talking about: getting your feet set fast and in alignment...
@HIkariTenchi8 жыл бұрын
Yeah but the whole driving your foot and making sure you make squeaking sound was too much. Like his explanation was too thorough for something simple. If you use a 1-2 and hop as a part of your game, the boost step will come naturally.
@Johnkoth5 жыл бұрын
To much talk. I'd rather see Allan Houston do it or someone else. Catch and shoot is the best way of shooting. Dribbling down court and stopping and hitting a 3 is actually harder. Dribbling to be open and shooting a 3 is harder also. Getting open and shooting the 3 is the best way. Unless you're Larry Bird, John Stockton, Steph Curry.

Honestly a lot of this is pointless. There are a lot of great shooters that don't have textbook form. The best shooter in the world doesn't have the greatest form. It's more about repetition than hop or step. How about teaching kids how to have a work ethic to go in the gym & take thousands of shots per week instead of coming out with a new video every month teaching a "new way" to shoot.
@rterrell128 жыл бұрын
Well if he made videos like that it would be very boring and completely useless. If you are a athlete that should already be expected from you to go to the gym and practice. That's the only way you will improve. Coach is adding ways that the bball player could improve his game. I know watching his videos had helped my game drastically.

+BBALLBREAKDOWN That's definitely not true. You might take longer to make shots consistently as oppose to someone that puts the same time in as you but have better form but again it's all about the amount of time you put in. Kevin Martin has bad form but I'll trust him making a free throw over Deandre Jordan or Dwight Howard or even Lebron James. Rick Barry shot free throws under hand & shot a better percentage than current NBA players. Truth is everybody has a different form but the time & work ethic you put behind it is what will make you a better shooter.

The hop is still better in every way in standing catch-and-shoot situations. The 1-2 step is more useful than the hop when moving at very high speeds. Doing a combo of the hop and 1-2 is pointless imo.
